In Duke’s defense, it really wasn’t supposed to go this far.
Really, it wasn’t supposed to happen at all. It was an accidental mix of impulsivity, the desire to stop being looked down on, and wanting to test the limits of his new training.
First, it was “I want to meet the Hamilton brothers.” Then, it was “I don't want to be a random, forgettable fan.” Then “I don't just want to be that Wayne Kid who used daddy's money to meet a celebrity.”
So he did a bit of tomfoolery. Nothing too extreme, really he was just practicing all the new skills Bruce and the gang had been teaching him. Really, it was educational.

S2 still considers himself more Man than Machine. He clings onto the name given to him by a long-dead woman, he laughs despite the artificial edge to his voice, and he plays despite the clinking of metal in his bones. He tries to honor an extinct species as a final testament to their horrific glory. He doesn’t blame them - not all of them.BLOOD IS FUEL
S1 considers himself more Machine than Man. He only remembers his name due to his obnoxious brother, he refuses to emote despite the long-dead instincts, and he operates based on efficiency, not flashiness. He blames them - but there is nothing left to blame.HELL IS FULL
S3 isn't sure if he is Man or Machine. He didn't really know enough about humanity to decide. S1.3 had told him stories, of course - he gave them like gifts. The most important thing he gave S3 was a name, but it's not like there's anyone left to use it.(aka: the dmc parallels/references were already obvious, might as well)

Except, as he begins to piece together the Slayer's identity, it paints a stranger and stranger picture - because there's something too familiar about him, something that drags up old, forbidden memories. But surely, this isn't who he thinks this is, right?

She was there visiting an old friend of hers when she passed a familiar name, causing her to do a double take and stumble over.
Sheila Haywood.
She barely knew Sheila, really. It was a one-night stand under a different name and a different face, back when she was going through her ‘the universe is ending and all my friends keep dying’ depression arc (one of many, really). She remembered Sheila’s name, though. She remembered all their names.
