Isn’t he? In a way? In many ways. Ever since the San Marino fiasco they’ve been tugging at each other’s invisible strings. Anything Ayrton says it’s meant to rile up Alain, anything he says is meant to keep him in place. Every debrief becomes a complicated battle of patience, but also it’s the only time they truly speak, and he misses having actual conversations.

Luca tells him a story, something about his sister and their childhood and peaches, all while Carmy’s mouth still burns. He glances past Luca, just for a second, at the clock, and notices it’s completely blurry. He blinks three times quickly to try and clear his eyes, but it doesn’t work. The two paintings on both sides of it are crystal clear, but he can’t read a single thing on the clock. Someway, somehow, when he realizes the clock doesn’t work, his mouth doesn’t burn anymore.
