A wandering scholar and his ethereal companion find a long-abandoned treasure. At first glance he thinks he has simply stumbled upon a ruined ancient capital, filled with the promise of incredible archaeological treasures and riven through with the history of a long-dead civilisation. But when he wakes up one day and finds the city has come alive around him, its people bowing to him as though they know and respect him, he has unknowingly begun a journey toward redemption for a terrible mistake he made two thousand years ago.

“Skizz, something’s wrong.”
“I know, buddy, but I can’t help if I can’t see you.”
There was a quiet whine and then Impulse appeared from around the corner. Skizz pressed his mouth in a thin line, staring at the new features on his best friend. There are some tiny horns protruding from his forehead, turning from Impulse’s skin color to black at the tip and fangs were poking from his lips. Most jarringly, Impulse’s normal, brown, human eyes had gone pitch black. There were tiny little pinpricks of yellow in the middle. “Hmm. You’re not Impulse.”
Or, a ghost hunt goes a little wrong, and Impulse gets a new friend in his body for a while.
Or, or, I wrote something new to sprinkle in between my fantasy AU fics.

A distant knock cut the conversation short, and the two exchanged confused glances.
“I didn’t invite anyone,” Mumbo defended himself.
Grian only rolled his eyes, disappearing from the counter to appear a few moments later in the kitchen doorway. “Want me to check it out?”
“No!” Mumbo immediately rushed to the doorway, stopping only when he would have to go through Grian to go any further. “I can check, it’s fine.”
Tilting his head, Grian asked innocently, “Why can’t I? They wouldn’t even see me. It might be someone you don’t want to talk to. If you answer it, they’d know you’re here, but if I did….”
“Yes, well, it could also be someone I do want to talk to, and you would scare them away because of that.”
Grian responded with an exaggerated offended gasp. “I can’t believe you would accuse me of that, Mumbolio.”
Another knock rang out, interrupting the exchange before Mumbo could make a retort. Instead, he sighed. “Please let me through.”

Summary
Humans are largely an undocumented species in the greater universe. All who had ever tried to reach the outer cosmos had not survived; all but one, that is.
X, also known as Xisuma, found himself on the other side of the universe with nothing but what he had on him when he was taken. He decided that this was a prime opportunity to screw around and find out. One by one, Xisuma assembled the crew of the Hermitcraft, a ragtag team of misfit aliens from all across the cosmos.
