Summary
Ilya was 12 years old when he saw his mother, Irina, in their living room staring at a magazine when he got home. He was a growing boy and played a lot of hockey so he blurted out, “Mama, I am hungry! What’s our food?”
“Oh hello there too, Ilyusha,” his mother chided. She, however, hadn’t lifted her eyes from the magazine. She was tracing her fingers lightly on a page.
“Mama, who’s that?” Ilya asked as he looked over his Mama’s shoulder.
“It’s Lucy Liu,” his mother answered softly.
“Who?”
“Ilyusha , look at the beautiful constellation on her face,” his Mama said softly. She was still reverently touching her fingertips over the woman’s freckles.
“Constellation? You mean веснушки (vesnushki)?” Ilya said, scratching his head. He had seen freckles on his friends from school, but he never called them constellations.
“No, Ilyusha, they are more beautiful than freckles. Look at them together with her features. They are stars on her face,” his mama explained patiently.
OR
Ever wondered why Ilya was so fond of Shane's freckles? Did Irina play a part in that?

Summary
Ilya Rozanov was 19 when Ekaterina was born. Her first memories date back to when she was 4. When he was home, he would spend as much time with her as he could. He would always take her to the park, play with her, and sing her to sleep when he could. He saw the way her parents would ignore her unless people were around who would look down on them. He wanted her to have a somewhat decent childhood, so he did all he could when he was around.
She was 8 when Ilya left, never coming back
He was her safe space until he wasn't.
Ekaterina learns that he is gone, never to return. Or so she thinks.This is EKaterina's story of love, hate, growth, and stregnth.

He removes the aluminum bottle cap from what is now his fourth Zima, congratulating himself for the responsible act of hydration. He is - feeling slightly off-kilter, however - perhaps there is such a thing as ‘too much, too good’ - even when it comes to the simple act of drinking this strange but delicious sparkling water.
He resolves to take this next round slowly as he makes his way back to the table.
The beverage in his hand receives a thunderous number of felicitations from the rest of the gathering. Shane decides that he will accept their unexpected accolades for taking care of both his mind and body this weekend without further question - daring not to look a gift horse in the mouth, as they say.
The gathered five settle in around the table, each man contemplating his intended victim in this looming group duel of wit versus bravery.
