Summary
Curled up at the back of the closet, against the wall and very unsuccessfully trying to hide himself behind the edge of a box of hazmat suits, is Simon.
Grace stares. Simon stares back, seemingly frozen. He's sitting on the floor, legs curled up, hand halfway through shielding his face. The lighting isn't great, but his cheeks and eyes shine in a way that clearly show he's been crying. A lot.
"Oh my gosh," Grace starts, panic lurching into sympathy and quickly joined by shock. "Simon?"
***
Simon has barely age regressed before, and never in front of anyone else. But after the events in the SM-13 and while traveling with Grace & Rocky back to Erid, he needs new ways to heal.

Simon shuffles against him, working himself closer, and then he speaks for the first time in a chapter and a half. "Thank you, Mama."
Grace freezes. He stops reading. His entire mind crashes to a halt.
Simon is loose and warm against him, until he tilts back to look at him through dark hair that's fallen into his face. "Was… Was that…" There's a flicker of adult worry in his eyes, blurry and uncomfortable. -

Summary
I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

He slowly lifts a hand toward me. I don’t run from it, because the twisted thing is, now I know more than I ever did that he presents no danger to me. He will do anything to keep me safe and happy.
And that’s my doom.

The human brain cannot endure 4 years alone. It can barely endure 24 hours alone.
Especially not mine. I’m weak little coward, after all. It doesn’t take me long to break and let him hug me.
… It's significantly less than 24 hours.

Summary
“I don’t know,” says Simon. “I don’t even know where we’re going, they won’t tell me.” He buries his face in his knees and arms again, and Grace hears something that sounds suspiciously like a sob. Maybe Simon’s eyeballs were sweating too.
“You have to promise you’ll come back,” Grace demands, his own lower lip trembling. "Pinky promise!" He jabs his pinky into Simon’s cheek and pokes him with it until Simon looks up.
Simon’s eyes are red-rimmed, but Grace’s glad that he’s managed to surprise just the tiniest smile from him. “I’m not pinky promising, that shit’s for babies,” he says, eyeing Grace’s extended pinky with mock disdain.
“Then how am I supposed to know you’ll keep your promise?” Grace shoots back.
“We gotta seal the deal with something else,” Simon says seriously.

A modern-day AU with no astrophage or the quiet rapture where Simon and Grace are childhood friends and met at a playground when they were eight.

Bookmarker's Notes
Grace’s hoping to stumble through the awkward mess of maybe we should get together again and when are you free, but before he can get the words out, Simon’s walked Grace back against his door, hands braced on either side of Grace’s head. He gives Grace a second, two, to turn away if he wants, before he brings their mouths together, gently.
It’s not hot and heavy and wet—just a light press of lips that’s warm and soft, with a hint of vanilla—but when Grace’s finished blinking, stunned, he surges forward, for a kiss that’s twenty years overdue.

Bookmarker's Notes
“No, sweetheart – I’m sorry. I love it, I promise. Just got overwhelmed. You’ve given me something...” Simon holds his gaze, and his eyes crinkle into half-moons as he smiles. “Jesus Christ, I could live a hundred lives, and I still wouldn’t deserve you,” he says mildly and swipes his thumb across Ryland’s mouth. The callouses catch on his lower lip and tug, and Ryland whimpers despite himself. “You beautiful fucking genius. How did a bastard like me get so lucky?”
