Summary
Danny's always had a bit of a bleeding heart problem.
He can't help it; no matter how hard he tries, it always wraps around to him trying to help. He just can't look the other way when someone is suffering. Can't turn a blind eye no matter how hard he tries to drive a stake into it. It's not possible. He can't leave someone alone when it's obvious they need a hand.
That's probably why when he was fourteen, he snuck into the basement and released all of the ghosts his parents captured back into the Ghost Zone. He couldn't ignore the screaming anymore, not when he could hear them crying for help. It's probably why he turned on his heel right after, donned a mask and a thermos, and started capturing ghosts before his parents could. So they couldn't hurt them anymore.
It's probably also why, four months after having the worst truth of his life told to him, at sixteen, Danny looks down into the eyes of a six-year-old, blatant clone of Damian Wayne, and decides to take him home. The kid is far from home and lost, how could he not give a helping hand?
He's always had a bleeding heart problem.
