Before she could really stop herself her arms were around Jack, pulling him into a kiss more passionate that she’d have allowed herself had she been sober. The noise of the rooftop faded into the background as his hands settled on her waist.
But as the fireworks exploded in the sky above, the kiss felt more like an escape than a celebration. She pulled back slightly, scanning his face and looking almost disappointed.
“Happy New Year,” Jack whispered, giving her that charming smile that almost made her forget why she’d ever consider leaving.
Claire forced a smile in return, her hands dropping to his chest. “Happy New Year.”
She tried to soak it in, to ground herself in the moment, but her gaze betrayed her. It drifted again— inevitably, stupidly— to Leon.

Claire had given up the idea of motherhood long ago, least of all with a man who on his best day just managed to numb the pain. Life, however, had an unexpected way of granting wishes. Chris stared at the guy in the RPD uniform who staggered in; young, puppy-round features, gritting his teeth as he caught the edge of the desk on entry, trying to support a wound to his right arm. He glanced up, caught sight of Chris on the floor, and his eyes lit up like the fourth of July.
“Chris Redfield?” he asked, stumbling over to drop to his knees beside him. “You’re Claire’s brother? Oh my god, I actually found you.”

Summary
There is a tacit understanding between those who constantly live in danger that separation is never too far away. Friends and enemies alike may leave just as suddenly as they arrive, greetings and farewells exchanged as quickly as a rapidly firing gun. However, to worry is to be human, and even though Chris should've grown used to the shadows of death haunting those around him, himself included, the thought of losing a loved one remains a thorn in his heart, one that he always fails to pluck away.
