Summary
Sometimes, you spent time with “the boys.” Frankie, the shy but steady pilot with a surprising sense of humor, always wearing his baseball cap. Santiago with the busted knees, who was trying to convince everyone that physical therapy was going better than it was so he could put off making a decision about whether or not to take a subcontractor gig in Colombia, and who alternated between intensity and easy charm. If you blushed a little more in response to Santiago’s teasing and looked a little too closely at him when you thought he wasn’t looking, well. No one else needed to know. The point was, you liked Frankie and Santiago.
You did not like Tom.
You weren’t really sure if the other guys liked Tom either, or if there was simply too much history, too many bullets, too many times when his orders had made the difference between life and death. A brother bound in blood.

“Why don’t they just print more money?”
It was your tone that grabbed Benny’s attention more than anything else. It was definitely not sincere, although it didn’t look like the idiot in front of you was picking up on that. It also wasn’t the kind of feigned curiosity or innocence that some girls put on when guys expected it of them. It was flat, and dry, and sharp, almost daring him to say exactly what you both knew would come out of his mouth next. Even as Benny gathered the round of beers from the bartender, he lingered next to the pair of you at the bar, desperately wanting to see what corner you were driving him into.
“Oh, they can’t just print money,” the guy said with a smarmy chuckle. “That would lead to inflation. Inflation is when–”
“Oh, I’m sorry, but I don’t think that’s correct.” Your eyes were pitying as you cut the guy off. “See, what you’re referring to is actually hyperinflation. Capitalist economists actually encourage inflation at a rate of about two to three percent per year in order to stave off deflation. But I don’t really feel like explaining deflation to you. So.”
