    Nom loved being useful. Who didn’t?

    Sure, he didn’t have a specific task like everyone else. Cherri had her plants, Katie had her tinkering, 4c had his water, Mae had the animals, and Apo had her sunlight. Nom, on the other hand, was a fast-flying fairy. There wasn’t exactly a job that required him to sit in one place and work away at something. Instead, he spent most of his time exploring places the others couldn’t easily reach, finding resources, scouting out new areas, and bringing things back to the tree. It was a different kind of task, but it was still a task. 

    Without him, their little system would fall apart. Who else would get Cherri her pumpkin seeds? Who would tell Mae about the adorable hedgehogs he’d found three forests over? Who would bring Katie the iron she needed for her latest contraption? He’d even managed to find a fishing book for 4c. 

    See? Useful.

    Fairy!Nom goes out to get wheat seeds right before a thunderstorm and gets hit by lightning on the way back, angst ensues

    Thunder shook the deck. Great, heaving waves of water crashed over the bow. Sheets of rain pelted Legend, held to the ship by only a rope lashed to the helm. He fought for control of the ship against the fierce wind, which threatened to capsize him.

    Legend’s hands shook as he gripped the slick wood of the wheel. He flinched every time lightning arced across the unforgiving sky.

    Wind, in horror, jerks around to see Warriors stuffing several bottles from the shop into a paper bag. “Of course it is,” says Warriors. “Now, let’s get going.”

    And the horrors continue: the one person everyone was relying on to complain about having to dress up for Warriors' court, Legend, does nothing. Worse than that, he smirks at the rest of them, flipping back a tress of his discolored hair over his shoulder as Warriors comes to inspect him. “Well?” he says.

    “...I suppose,” Warriors allows. “You do have a sense of style.”

    The shadow has done this before, disguising itself as the same species and living amongst other monsters. So long as it stuck to creatures in which the color scheme wouldn't be a dead giveaway, the cuckoo routine was child’s play for a shapeshifter.
