Ace expected to die at the hands of Whitebeard. Instead, he finds himself stuck aboard the Moby Dick, “kidnapped” by a crew that stubbornly insists on calling him “brother.” Determined to escape and reunite with the Spades, Ace isolates himself and rejects this pirate family he doesn’t understand.
And besides, if this family is so close-knit, why did their mysterious First Commander vanish on the very day Ace arrived, abandoning his post and leaving Thatch and Izou on edge?

“Marco! Breakfast ended like an hour ago, get the hell up!” He hadn’t heard that voice in years. It truly was cruel. He bit his lip and hugged the pillow to his face, trying to bury himself further into the fabric, if that was even possible.
“Marco!” The Thatch of his dreams slammed his fist on the door again. Cruel, too cruel. Marco’s knuckles went white with how hard he was clutching the pillow, feeling the fabric tearing under his grip.
Another knock, obnoxiously loud. Marco wanted to scream. He wanted to scream and cry and tell him to get the fuck away, to just stop! He wanted it all to stop! He knew he’d fucked up! He knew it already! Why the hell did they have to keep tormenting him!? Why did he have to see them over and over and know that every time he reached out they’d vanish into nothing but fire and blood!?

“Remember when we lost track of Fire Fist at Sabaody? Apparently he made it to the New World, but too soon. Looks like he lost his crew and ship; he definitely needs help, yoi.”
A laugh, jolly and bright; the den den mimics Whitebeard almost perfectly, except for the mustache it cannot completely correctly imitate. “Looks like you’re getting a new brother!”
Or, Portgas D. Ace meets another Emperor before the Whitebeard Pirates find him.

“Careful, Spy-san. Aren’t you getting too comfortable around a big, bad, terrible pirate?” Ace shoots back, as he watches the relaxed lines of the spy’s shoulders. The blond easily falls into step with Ace.
“We are both stuck on this ship until we make it to land,” the blond points out. “Besides, I already told you. I could take you on with my pink finger.”
Ace sticks his tongue out. “I bet even Luffy could take you on, and he is a weak crybaby.”
That elicits a laugh from not-Sabo, and it has Ace reeling with delight. And oh, he is a little fucked, isn’t he? Even if this stranger is not Sabo, even if it is just his face and his actions and his stupid propensity to get under Ace’s skin, Ace could never raise a weapon against him and actually intend to kill.
It’s not Spy-san, but rather he who has gotten too comfortable.
...
Ace and Sabo meet before Marineford. Along the way, they fight some bad guys, liberate a nation, and finally find their way back to each other.

Desde que se emparejó con Marco supo que, aunque por muy hermosa que luzca su marca de apareamiento en su cuello, su final feliz no estaba asegurado.
