Summary
“Curly and I are now fucking.” Zoro says, as crassly as possible. Sanji flares up in anger as he raises his leg to bring it down in a swift kick on Zoro’s head.
“Don’t say it like that in front of the ladies!” He then straightens up, clears his throat and dusts his suit as Zoro nurses his head wound. “We lost focus and entered into a consensual workplace relationship.”
Nami blinks. “Yeah, we know already.”

Summary
“What are we?” Sanji asks, tone soft and slight.
“We’re pirates.”
The simplicity of that answer doesn’t sit well with Sanji, who visibly shifts under Zoro’s grip. “I mean to each other.”
Zoro can't tell Sanji what he means to him.

Summary
Sanji makes a gesture like he's going to throw up when he’s asked the question.
“What do I think about Zoro? What do you mean, what do I think about Zoro? I don’t think about mossheads. I think he’s nauseating and annoying and why the hell are you even asking me about this? Did he… say something? About me?”
Zoro hums. “What do I think about Curly? He’s not a bad salesman. I think the eyebrow is what’s putting off customers. That’s why he makes most of his sales on the phone.”
Sanji’s eyebrow twitches, his jaw tight. “That stupid son of a bitch, I’m going to kill — ”

Summary
Zoro feels so pathetic, so weak and all he can think back to is him getting on his knees in front of Mihawk so he’d never have to feel so weak again. Still, the tears come — a disgusting tidal wave and he buries his face in the collar of Sanji’s shirt to hide from Sanji’s knowing gaze.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do.” Zoro says, so softly that he isn’t even sure if Sanji hears him.
“We’ll figure it out.” Sanji says, running his hand through the tuft of Zoro’s hair. “Don’t we always?”
Zoro wakes up on the day before his birthday. Then it happens again. And again.

Summary
“Sanji.” And there’s something sickening, something tender about the way Zoro says his name — and it’s with a start that Sanji realizes that Zoro has never called his name before. Zoro turns to face him, face etched with concern and hurt and pain and he says, “Just stop.”
It’s hopeless, it’s useless, he’s gone now, Zoro seems to say and that fragile hope shatters inside Sanji’s chest. It splinters and pierces his organs and the tears roll down Sanji’s cheeks.
“I just want them to come home.” Sanji says, and something on Zoro’s face cracks.

Summary
“Sanji.” Luffy replies, softly grinning and Sanji loves the way his name sounds on his captain’s tongue. “I’m hungry.”
It’s funny how Luffy never asks him for anything. It’s always Sanji, I’m hungry. Sanji, I’m tired. Sanji, help me with this thing. Luffy has never once said please and it’s terrifying to know that he never has to.
Sanji doesn't realize when he starts looking at Luffy differently.

“Promise me something. Wait for me.” Ace says, and he lights Sanji’s cigarette with his index finger. The cigarette burns red hot, a newfound warmth crawling up the side of Sanji’s neck. “After this is over, I’m gonna come find you.”
Sanji can’t trust himself if he leans in now. Instead, he nods. “Drinks are on me next time.”
Ace grins. “Deal.”
Sanji meets Ace in Alabasta.

Summary
Sanji hums. “Thought I scared you off.”
“Nothing you do could ever scare me off.” Ace answers, with as much honesty as he — a wanted, menacing pirate — can muster. “Really.”
“Mhm, you’re on dish duty next time then.”
I love you, I love you, I love you. “Okay, maybe there is one thing.” Ace replies and drowns in the honeyed sound of Sanji’s golden laughter.

Summary
There’s a pack of cigarettes on the table next to Sanji’s bed and Ace grabs it. He isn’t thinking clearly as he tears the seal open, grabs a cigarette, and lights it with a flame dancing on his finger. Ace remembers the way Sanji’s neck would turn red when he did it and Ace laughs.
He can’t bear to look at Sanji in this condition, but Ace takes his hand and makes a promise.
“If you wake up, Sanji, this time I’ll do it right.” Ace mumbles, a promise kept between the two of them. “All you have to do is wake up. Please wake up.”
Sanji hasn't woken up for twenty-five days. Ace tries to save him.

Summary
The splices of ochre light fall onto Sanji, casting a glow on him. He leans over to whisper something in Usopp’s ear, who shrugs in response and grabs the guitar from Luffy. Sanji’s golden hair is perfectly tousled, falling over his slanted eyebrow and when he laughs, Zoro’s lungs fall short of breath. He hates this, hates this with every piece of his entire being, but when their eyes meet over the bonfire, Zoro can’t bring himself to look away.
Zoro notices all of this around him and then nothing at all.
If they were alone, Zoro would say the corpus of apologies in his mind. That he wishes he had done better when Sanji was still around. That he wishes he had listened to the things that Sanji had asked him to do. That he wishes he would’ve told Sanji that he loved him when Sanji still believed him.
Brook shoves a glass of wine in Zoro’s face, as Luffy loops his arms around Zoro’s neck. But Zoro doesn’t need wine. He’s already drunk.
The aftermath of Zoro and Sanji's break-up.

Summary
“Wait, wait, hold on. You found us through the Eternal Pose and Chopper found a big snake that he named — do you really not remember?” Zoro asks, running a hand through his hair as if in distress. He turns his heel, soft eyes, and a downturned mouth. “Cook?”
Seeing that confused, borderline helpless light in Zoro’s eyes is unsettling. A silence falls over them, light as the first snow of winter. Sanji can hear his heart beat as loud as the engines turning on the Going Merry before.
“Zoro, none of these things happened.” Nami says.
Zoro hasn't recovered from the events of Thriller Bark. The crew ( — especially Sanji) learn this the hard way.
