His head hurt like hell, he felt like a dead man walking, and half the clinic patients seemed inclined to infect everyone with the seasonal plague. He’d had a case of pediatric drowning, he’d cracked an old man’s ribs before finding a DNR, and he’d forgotten to bring a coat, which meant he’d arrived soaked, and that he would be walking home in his lab coat. Maybe a car would mistake him for snow and run him over.”

Lucy is drunk when the idea is suggested. She's sitting in the dorm common area with a few of the other med students, knees tucked to her chest, nursing a bottle of beer, and amongst the hazy half-formed fantasies it's the one that somehow takes flight.
Doctor Carter is strict when it comes to dorm parties- but what if he didn't have to know about them?
She arches her brow, struggling to keep Willy’s ever swaying gaze. What?
Well, think about it. If we made sure there was no evidence in the morning, and somehow kept him out all night… he wouldn't have a clue.

Summary
The pain is all in his head.
When John was in rehab, he heard the words so often they became a mantra, one that echoed in his mind from the moment he woke up to the moment he fell asleep. Slowly but surely, the nonexistence of pain became an internalised truth.
Except now he's sitting on a bench outside of the ER, curled into himself because he hurts, and for once, he can't be convinced that the pain exists only in his head. Something is wrong.

Shortly after Carter arrives back to work from rehab, he starts to feel unwell. He knows he hasn't been using, but does everyone else?
