Summary
So, the first thing that happens is Castiel comes back.
~~~
"Right," Dean says eventually, gruffly. He looks down at his shoes. "I'm not gonna tell you how to live your life, man. It's—you know, yours. Do your thing, love who you love, whatever. I can't really stop you from loving me, if that's what you've decided to do, but I don't—I can't—"
"I know," Castiel murmurs, still just smiling a little, not looking heartbroken at all. "Don't worry about it, Dean, that's all I ask."
"So we're—" Dean risks a glance up, swallowing thickly. "We're good?"
Castiel hums. "We're good."
Summary
The five seconds before Dean's fully awake are the best moments of his day. In that quiet space between sleep and wakefulness, when dreams are still clinging to the edges of his mind and all he feels is the soft mattress and the warm sheets, he can pretend that everything is fine. That when he opens his eyes and stretches himself awake—joints popping, bones cracking—there'll be someone waiting for him in the kitchen with a hot cup of coffee and an off-center smile.
It's only five seconds. A handful of heartbeats. One painful inhalation and exhale. The blink of grit from his eyes.
Not nearly enough time before it hits him all over again.
Summary
With a baby now living in the bunker, Dean gets the opportunity to catch up on years of touch starvation. The wiggly Nephilim is just the remedy for the hunter and he intends to raise Jack as his own by Castiel and Sam's sides. Things start to get interesting, however, when the baby starts to mimic one of his father's mannerisms and Dean's shoulder gets some extra attention.
"Cas. I can't read your mind."
"Do you think the bunker's a good place to raise a child?"
Summary
The thing is, Dean is an idiot. That’s not news and he’s made his peace with that, but sometimes things would just be easier if he wasn’t. This right here, for example, wouldn’t be happening. But if there’s one thing Dean just can’t do, it’s talking about his feelings. So, he’s being an idiot. Sue him. If anything, this is on Cas, because if he follows the thread of events that lead to this, Cas fucking started it.
Or, the one where Dean rather locks himself in Baby’s trunk than confront his feelings.
