Work Text:
Loud clattering of metal falling over comes from the fake observatory. Megamind flicks the light on, standing in his bunny slippers and Metro Man branded boxers.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
The large metal shark lays next to the abandoned project. The large metal chamber with a glass door and tubes coming from the top of the machine. His cloning machine. Megamind checks behind the cylindrical shaped cloning machine.
An undisturbed, unplugged cord lays in dust bunnies.
Megamind nearly stubs his toe on the large, hollow metal shark, with fins made of thick paper. Yet paper strong enough and light enough, he could float in the wind with like a parasail.
Megamind gets down on his knees, opening the metal panel, his hand disturbing the dust. Inside is a space where a container of powerful energy would sit, but it’s completely empty.
No power source.
Megamind slams the panel closed with a click. Megamind stands on his feet with a shrug of his shoulders.
Megamind’s bunny slippers flop and squeak, walking back to the hallway where his bedroom tempts him. Megamind flicks off the light switch behind him before leaving.
A blue tint in the corner starts to glow stronger and stronger. The cloning machine’s watery gel inside glows shades of blues.
Suddenly, blue electricity sparks with life. It travels amongst the cords on the ground until it travels to the large metal shark, laying on top of one of the cords. The metal shark’s fins slowly move back and forth until its eyes glow with that same electric blue.
The sun shines on a new day, Metro Man smiles to the ice cream vendor in front of him. Metro man buys a large chocolate ice cream cone, before giving it to a crying child and a stressing mother. The child immediately cheers up to eat the ice cream cone with a smile. The mother with bags under her eyes, nods once to Metro Man before mouthing ‘Thank You’.
Metro Man simply smiles back, returning the nod back.
Suddenly, a large beam of light comes from the fake observatory and hits Metro Man in the back. Metro Man falls to his hands and knees, standing up onto his feet. His ankles pop with effort. Metro Man raises an eyebrow at the fake observatory as the beam of light disappears.
Pounding on the door startles Megamind from his thoughts. Megamind peers around his new invention, a welder’s mask protecting his face. Megamind throws the mask aside, onto a nearby work table where his blueprints lay.
Megamind swings open the door to his fake observatory. A smile crosses Megamind’s face as Metro Man stands before him, staring into Megamind's green eyes.
“Did you work on any ray guns today, Little Buddy?”
Megamind’s smirk returns, “I have, but I haven’t tried it yet”
Megamind walks away from the door but Metro Man follows. A large machine, standing tall and an obvious ray design, like the directional point at the top, ending in a large ball of blue and rings follow along the cone. Megamind holds the deactivate cord of the new invention’s ray, in his hand.
Metro Man glares at the cord with thought, but his eyes travel to the empty cloning machine in the corner, the chamber’s glass door somewhat open. “What’s that?”
Megamind nervously laughs, dropping the cord beside him. “That’s just an unsuccessful machine. The Clone-o-Matic of Doom!” Megamind throws his hands in the air, as to show it off and eager to talk about it more. “It was supposed to clone you but it didn’t do anything” Megamind’s arms fall by his sides, looking away with a face of bluish-purple embarrassment.
“Clone me!? Why?” Metro Man snaps his head back, staring at Megamind with surprise.
“I miss you, Golden Boy! What else would I do?”
Metro Man’s shoulders relax, a smile growing on his face. “You could’ve called” Metro Man clears his throat, looking away from Megamind. “Ok. If anything happens, I’ll let you know”
Megamind’s eyebrow practically floats off into space with confusion, “What do you mean? What are you talking about?”
A loud boisterous chuckle comes from within Metro Man’s strong chest, “Remember? Noon?”
Megamind’s eyes glimmer, remembering what they said last night, near the strike of midnight. “Oh right! How could I forget? See you then, Goodie-Two-Shoes”
Metro Man keeps his smile as he walks out of the fake observatory. Megamind stares at the door, long after he left.
Why wasn’t Metro man flying?
Megamind passes a glance at his new invention. The Power-De-Stroyer!
Metro Man goes about his day, walking on the city’s sidewalks, picking up any trash along the way, to throw it away where it belongs. A birds peck around in the grass before chirping at Metro Man and flying away.
That was weird.
Metro Man looks behind him. In the sky the large metal, robotic shark flies out from the open fake observatory roof, breaking a few things in its path. The shark’s metal electric blue eyes lock onto Metro Man, snapping its sheet metal teeth before coming after Metro Man.
Metro Man tries to jump and fly into the air to punch the large flying shark out of the sky, but Metro Man falls onto his face.
Silence carries through the air as the citizens around him, stare at the powerless Metro Man, until the shark flies closer. The people around Metro Man scream with terror, running around like the apocalypse has come and they all need to hide. Cars tip over in a panic and Metro Man sighs, getting back onto his feet.
The large metal shark snaps its sheet metal teeth at Metro Man, gliding through the air by wiggling its fins, as if it was swimming like a shark in the air. Metro man glares at the shark, his hands bunch up into fists by his sides.
Meanwhile, a glow of blue comes from behind Megamind, grabbing his attention, away from checking the wiring of The Power-De-Stroyer.
Out of nowhere, a fist connects with Megamind’s face. A fist similar to… Metro Man.
Megamind faces where the punch came from, sitting on his butt on the fake observatory’s floor. Standing before him is the red eyes of Metro Man… but not Metro Man. His uniform is black with red detailing.
The Clone-o-Matic of Doom works!
Megamind whispers under his breath, fear dripping in, “Oh no… it works” Megamind runs to the large gap in the observatory roof.
Below, the real Metro man dodges and tries to punch away the large metal shark, making his fists bleed.
Megamind whispers under his breath, mostly talking to himself, “Metro Man never bleeds! What happened?”
Evil Metro Man’s malicious punch sends Megamind across the room, slamming his back into the wall. Megamind tries to get up, wincing in response.
Malicious Metro Man floats a few feet above the floor, coming closer and closer to Megamind. There’s a certain glow in Evil Metro Man’s eyes. A deadly glow.
Megamind’s eyes widen with recognition. He fights against his pain, dodging out of the way before Malicious Metro’s laser vision can dice him into pieces.
Evil Metro Man chuckles. A cold empty feeling. Not like the warmth that radiates off of the real Metro Man. “Wow, how pathetic can you be? You can’t be the hero he deserves!”
Megamind glares into Malicious Metro’s eyes, gently clutching his heart. “You’ll never be like the real Metro Man!”
“And he’ll NEVER love you back, will he? Heroes always get the girl.”
The gentle glow of blue comes from his workbench. Megamind quickly scurries to his feet to grab the De-Gun. With the speed of light itself, Malicious Metro Man grabs Megamind by the arm. Megamind screams as his arm breaks under Evil Metro Man’s pure super strength.
The smirk from Malicious Metro Man is as biting as a winter freeze and empty like a canister without a penny of proof of love inside.
Quickly, Evil Metro Man pulls Megamind in, as if they were to start dancing. Megamind bites his tongue, clenching his teeth to not let a scream escape.
Malicious Metro laughs in Megamind’s face, “Couldn’t surprise me. You can’t stop me… but you wouldn’t want to, would you? That would make you a hero. You’re made to be a villain and nothing more!”
The metallic screech and heavy stomping comes from the hallway. Minion leaps and tries to tackle Malicious Metro Man. Evil Metro Man dodges out of the way with speed, Minion can’t track with his fishy eyes. Minion’s robotic body that resembles a gorilla, falls to the ground, sliding a little until the dome on top, filled with water, hits against the Clone-o-Matic of Doom. The glass dome cracks, until it shatters.
Megamind pulls free from Malicious Metro man’s grip. Megamind runs to Minion, “Minion!”
Minion’s smiles comfortably with Megamind. The spilling water starts to short circuit the Clone-o-Matic of Doom. Little sparks come from the machine.
Malicious Metro Man’s gaze gravitates towards a wrench on Megamind’s workbench. With a smirk, he tightens his grip around it. Floating up behind Megamind, Malicious Metro raises the wrench towards the sky. The intent burning in his red eyes, quickly moving to strike Megamind’s large blue head.
The fake observatory’s door slams open. The real Metro Man runs in the middle, at the last second. Metro man’s bloody hands hold Evil Metro Man’s wrists in place.
Evil Metro Man growls with frustration, trying to push harder against him. Metro Man avoids his gaze as he balances the strength.
The Clone-o-Matic of Doom beeps once, catching Megamind’s attention. Megamind scurries and turns the dial on the side of the chamber to reverse. Megamind quickly looks around the floor, as the real Metro Man’s physical strength is starting to tire.
Megamind throws a small rock at Malicious Metro Man. The Evil Metro Man glares, his eyes glowing with an angry laser, preparing to fire. Metro Man swiftly grabs the wrench from Malicious Metro’s grip, smacking his eyes with it. Malicious Metro man reels back a little, holding his own face with his hands.
With Evil Metro Man off guard, Megamind pulls on Malicious Metro’s black suit. Metro Man flicks to Megamind with confusion, before he spots the reverse glowing blue on The Clone-o-Matic of Doom. Metro Man smirks at Megamind with a sparkling gleam in his teal eyes, understanding everything and trusting him completely.
Together, Metro Man and Megamind push Evil Metro Man into the chamber of the Clone-o-Matic of Doom. Megamind presses a button to close the glass door. The glass door to the chamber squeaks a little before giving up.
Malicious Metro Man’s eyes lock on Metro Man and Megamind with fury of a million suns, all burning to tear them into pieces. A sight scarier than Tighten.
Suddenly, the door slams closed and locks, before Malicious Metro Man could leave the machine. Metro Man and Megamind’s look at Minion who is flopping around near the emergency close door button.
Evil Metro Man slams his fists on the glass door, nearly shattering it with each hit. “I won’t be gone for long! I WILL be back to kill you all!”
Slowly, Malicious Metro Man falls apart one by one. His arms falling off. His head falling to the floor of the Clone-o-Matic of Doom’s locked chamber. Melting until there’s only thick, blue goop left on the bottom of the locked chamber.
Tense silence floods the air. Metro man stares at the blue goop left behind.
Megamind rushes by Minion’s side with a fishbowl in his hands. Minion jumps into the fishbowl of water, swimming around with glee. “Hurray! We did it!”
Metro Man slowly turns on his heel, staring at Megamind. Metro Man’s chest settles, seeing Megamind smile down at Minion. Metro man settles his hand on Megamind’s shoulder, “Can you promise you won’t do this again, Little Buddy?”
Butterflies flutter around in Megamind’s stomach. Megamind nods, returning a gentle smile, “I promise, Mr. Perfect”
A warm laugh comes from between Metro Man’s lips. Megamind slides to the Power-De-Stroyer with the help of his bunny slippers. Megamind open the panel and turning the dial to reverse what it does.
The beam of light hits Metro Man. Metro Man gently floats in the air, glowing golden with his super powers absorbing back into him. Metro Man gently opens the chamber’s glass door open and cupping his hands. Metro Man gathers some of the blue goop into his hands before drinking it down.
Metro Man looks back with those dreamy teal eyes and soft yet strong face of his. Megamind’s heart threatens to jump into his throat and confess—
Megamind jumps awake, sitting up immediately in bed, panting. Megamind touches his face, tracing the wet tracks. He’s been crying in his sleep. Megamind’s gaze flicks towards the clock on his bedside.
A few minutes before 3 in the morning.
Megamind lets out a sigh of relief but concern.
Was that real? It can’t be. Was it a dream? It felt too real. It must’ve happened in another time, another place, but not here… It feels so weird.
Megamind covers with his hands, flopping back onto his pillow. Megamind wipes away his sleepiness from his face and the tears alongside it.
A loud clatter comes from the other room. Megamind jumps out of bed in his Metro man branded boxers, decorated with Metro man’s face printed all over like polka dots. His feet slide into his bunny slippers that squeak against the floor with every step.
Turning on the lights with a click of the light switch, Metro Man stands before him, squinting against the sudden light.
