Before anything-- MAJOR SPOILERS FOR VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER!! If you have not watched seasons 1-8 in their entirety yet, do not read unless you're okay with spoilers!!!
Anyway. Hi! I wanted to take a sec to explain this story for a moment & also just introduce you to my OC, whom I've created for this story.
Firstly, I've always held a special place in my heart for Voltron. I grew up with it as a kid and now, almost an adult, I'm still very much in love with the characters and the storyline as well as the main themes explored throughout Legendary Defender.
That being said, there are many, many, many issues I have with VLD's writing, especially concerning things like timeline, portrayal of character arcs, exploration of morality, & lion-bonding contradictions. In going back and rewatching VLD, as well as spending time chatting with fellow fans and friends, I've tried my best to review the largest narrative issues in VLD's plot & canon that I think are most egregious AND can also be solved relatively easily.
Because of this, my story diverges from canon quite a bit. While it still follows the general timeline and plot points (Zarkon -> Lotor -> Earth -> Honerva), there's a lot of reshifting and reshaping of characters that I've done while writing. This has been a huge undertaking of rewatching and re-rewatching and re-re-rewatching and reading transcripts and spending time on tumblr and r/Voltron and other VLD fan places to try and sort out how these narrative issues can be best solved without making the story stray too far from canon. This has also been a lot of looking at other "fix-it" fanfics that catalogue similar data & seeing how other people generally solve issues within VLD's canon. Obviously there are major things that most people can agree were problematic (Adam and Allura's deaths did NOT happen, btw, I refuse to believe they did), but there are some smaller narrative points that my creative writing classes & workshops have opened my eyes to upon reviewing VLD's plotline.
Therefore, if you're looking for a very canon-adjacent storyline, you most likely won't find that here, depending on how okay you are with minor canon changes. In addition, this IS a Keith x OC story, so the glaring issues with Klance/Laith are resolved differently than how they are traditionally solved by fans. (Not that I don't ship 'em-- I do!!)
If you are, however, looking for a different take on the storyline, and my best attempt at an overall cleanup of VLD's plot, then try this out. I'm always open to constructive feedback & discussion in comments, whether on here or Quotev/Wattpad. New ideas are always appreciated, and this will probably be rewritten/edited a few times as new ideas come to me.
Please keep in mind that I cannot solve everything perfectly-- I'm still learning creative writing & honestly will probably continue to learn writing until the day I leave this earth. It's an everchanging, chaotic, but deeply rewarding passion of mine, and I'm always learning new techniques, styles, and lessons in the world of writing. There are also a few issues that this story simply cannot touch on/fix due to how much it royally messed up the plot (Shiro's death/Kuron, or the lion switch in season three, for example) and how much it would end up straying from canon if I tried to rewrite it in a sensical way. So, if there's something here that you see is still problematic, I'm very sorry. It's probably either because it was too complex/convoluted for me to redo or simply required a wholly new story, or some mix of the two.
And if there's a NEW problem that my rewrite has created, which I'm almost certain there is, again, I'm so sorry! Please feel free to comment-- constructive discussions & critiques are always welcome. :)
To address my OC-- due to the extreme lengthiness of my OC's backstory and general lore, the first three chapters deal solely with Luna and their story. It does feature quite a few elements from Voltron, and it is necessary to read to understand the full scope of the story, though, so it's not entirely unrelated, but it is lengthy. (Which I apologize deeply for.)
Finally, I do have a Google Doc open to the public with general plots, timelines, headcanons, and overall notes for both this story & VLD as a whole. I'll keep it separated into sections so there are no spoilers for y'all that want to discover things organically, and I've tried my best to organize it as cleanly as I can. You can find it here. And because I have to say this, even though it goes without saying, all rights go to Voltron: Legendary Defender crew & Dreamworks. The only part of the story I own are my own OCs that I've created for the sake of the rewrite/romance/fanfic.
Please note that I've put trigger warnings on each chapter individually, but this story overall contains themes of child abuse (emotional + physical), violence (both graphic & canon-typical), angst, body horror/injury, trauma/PTSD, torture, mental health crises, alien experimentation, imprisonment, character death, psychological manipulation, vomiting, cursing/language, and themes of colonialism/imperialism. There's also a good chunk of purple prose in here. However, there is no smut or implied sex (my aroace ass can't do that shit lol), only kissing/physical affection/occasional inappropriate jokes. Again, chapter-specific trigger warnings will be placed.
