Kings of the Wilderwest Lore

Summary:

The world of Kings of the Wilderwest expands further than what's seen on screen. Within this tome, you'll find a list of all dragons discovered so far in the story (to be expanded as the story continues), a timeline of events to a relative day (which shall similarly be expanded), and a breakdown of the draconic deities.

Chapter 1: Book of Dragons

Chapter Text

An incomplete list of dragons:

  • Bewilderbeast aka King of Dragons aka Blizzard-maximus: a tidal (water) sea dragon. They are one of the seven dragons with a Divine Song. Alongside the normal control granted by the Song, their Singing leaves dragons feeling aggressive. (The blizzard-maximus name is based on the seadragonus giganticus maximus dragons from the books)
  • Boneknapper aka Bone-decorator: a mystery (mist) sky dragon. According to dragons, boneknappers and armorwings were once the same species who crafted armor from clay before humans began creating weapons from metal. Those with weaker fire began using bones to turn their voices into weapons to fight against those who'd cut their flock down. Eventually, the two kinds of dragons differed so much that they renamed themselves and went their separate ways. (The bone-decorator name is based on real-life decorator crabs)
  • Caterbillar aka Fern-winder: a boulder (earth) swarm dragon. When they fold their moth-like wings against their bodies, they look like caterpillars that have somehow grown to the size of small birds. Unlike most dragons, Caterbillars are completely herbivorous. Since their preferred diets include fruits and berries, they often form symbiotic relationships with beehives. They protect the hives from predators with their super-heated sand attacks, and the bees pollinate the plants they cultivate. The lead caterbillar is called the Bloom.
  • Changewing aka Stealth-melt: a mystery (mist) land dragon (The stealth-melt name is based on the stealth dragons from the books)
  • Deadly Nadder aka Proud-thorn: a sharp sky dragon
  • Devilish Dervish aka Hack-at: a sharp sky dragon (The hack-at name is based on the hackatoo dragon from the books)
  • Featherhide aka Mocking-serpent: a mystery (mist) land dragon (The mocking-serpent name is based on mockingbirds and the Feathered Serpent deity from Mesoamerican religions)
  • Fireworm aka Glow-worm: a stoker (inferno) swarm dragon. The lead fireworm is called the Mother (The glow-worm name is based on the glow-worm dragons from the books)
  • Flame Whipper aka Tail-popper: a stoker (inferno) land dragon. The ends of their tails can detach and explode. If trapped, they can even detach their entire tail for a larger explosion. They spend most of the time crawling along the walls and ceilings of caves using their sticky toe-pads. They can use their long, stretchy tongue to help aim their swirling fire breath. (The flame whipper name is based on the flame whipper dragons from the games. The tail-popper name is based on Tailflame from the games)
  • Flightmare aka Moon-freeze: a mystery (mist) sea dragon
  • Grasp Tail aka Link-lizard: a tracker (pursuit) land dragon. The tail of this small dragon functions as an additional appendage as it can stretch out and grab onto things. They use this ability to help them climb and swing through the trees of their forests. Despite having wings, they are only capable of gliding as opposed to true flight. When this dragon teams up, they can interlock their tails into a chain that can overpower larger dragons.
  • Gronckle aka Rock-gnaw: a boulder (earth) sky dragon
  • Hideous Zippleback aka Gas-zap: a mystery (mist) sky dragon
  • Hypnomunk aka Spine-mocker: a sharp land dragon. They are one of the seven dragons with a Divine Song. Alongside the normal control granted by the Song, their Singing leaves dragons feeling awed. They are medium-sized, wingless dragons with long tails covered in glittering, crystal-like scales that are razor-sharp. Their eyes can produce bright, flickering lights that can cause visions. (The hypnomunk and spine-mocker names are based on the hypnomunk dragons and mocker dragons, respectively, from the books)
  • Kraken aka Monstrous-strangulator: a tidal (water) land dragon. They're large dragons that greatly resemble octopuses, right down to the ability to camouflage themselves. Four of their "tentacles" are actually tough-skinned tails with venomous stingers at the ends. When approached, they use their venom to paralyze the intruder before grabbing them with their more fragile true tentacles and crushing them to death. They feed primarily on algae, though they will also eat mollusks or small fish. (The monstrous-strangulator name was taken from the monstrous-strangulator dragon in the books)
  • Leviathorgan aka Ice-clinger: a strike (storm) sea dragon. They are serpentine dragons with two sets of small, fin-like wings that they use to cling to the bottoms of the sea ice and icebergs they prefer to live under. Despite their aquatic nature, they can only breathe air so they usually have one of their two heads napping out of the water as the other catches fish. They take great offense when their napping head is awoken and will even chase the perpetrator into warm waters just to get their revenge. They can shoot poison-filled spears of ice from their mouths with accuracy befitting their class. (The leviathorgan name is based on the leviathorgan dragon from the books)
  • Monstrous Nightmare aka Smoldering-scales: a stoker (inferno) sky dragon
  • Mountain Ripper aka Driller-fire: a boulder (earth) land dragon (The mountain ripper name is based on the fault ripper dragon from Dragons: The Nine Realms and the driller-fire name is based on the driller-dragons from the books. They look similar to the fault ripper, but are the size of a gronckle and come in earth tones.)
  • Mudraker aka Marsh-lynx: a tracker (pursuit) sea dragon. This medium-sized dragon lurks in the waters of marshes, bogs, and bays. They search for prey using their special calls, which bounce back at them. They're shaped similarly to marine otters, though they're quite a bit bigger with spotted scales. They have mane-like fins on their cheeks and larger triangular-shaped ears atop their heads. (Marsh-lynx name is based off the marsh tiger dragons from the books)
  • Red Death aka Fire-giganticus: a stoker (inferno) land dragon. They are one of the seven dragons with a divine song. Alongside pulling dragons to it, its song leaves dragons anxious. (The fire-giganticus name is based on the fire dragon and the seadragonus giganticus maximus dragons from the books)
  • Ripwrecker aka Mist-sinker: a tracker (pursuit) sea dragon
  • Scauldron aka Steam-spewer: a tidal (water) sea dragon (The steam-spewer name is based on Steam-spewer from Dragons: Rise of Berk)
  • Scuttleclaw aka Slush-fin: a tidal (water) sky dragon (The slush-fin name is based on the slushclaw dragons from Rise of Berk)
  • Sidewinder aka Eye-spy: a tracker (pursuit) swarm dragon. They're mouse-sized winged serpentine dragons with eyes down their sides. They have limited X-ray vision as well as hummingbird-like wings that allow them to hover and fly sideways. Alongside having wonderful night vision, their eyes can light up like flashlights. If attacked, they can use this to temporarily blind the attacker and give themselves a chance to flee. The lead sidewinder is called the Sunspot (The sidewinder is based on the sidewinder dragons from the books)
  • Silver Poltergeist aka Wind-phantom: a strike (storm) sky dragon. They are one of the seven dragons with a Divine Song. Alongside the normal control granted by the Song, their Singing leaves dragons feeling pacified. They are the fastest dragons, judging by base speed alone. Their pale scales refract light which allows them to glow in the moonlight, blend in with the clouds, or fade into the shadows. They can charge up their scales by diving into their own plasma blast to become temporarily invisible. (The silver poltergeist and wind-phantom names are based on the silver phantom and windwalker dragons from the books as well as Pearlescent Poltergeist from the games)
  • Skrill aka Lightning-walker: a strike (storm) sky dragon (The lightning-walker name is based on Windwalker from the books)
  • Skullion aka Shiver-tooth: a sharp swarm dragon. They are medium-sized, wingless dragons. They have strong yet lithe bodies with powerful forelegs that they use to pounce on their prey. They have razor-sharp, gem-like spikes lining their back as well as sparkling silver teeth and an arrow-shaped tail tip. They spray ice instead of the usual fire, but they're weapons of choice are the talons on their feet. They're said to have the sharpest claws of any dragon, with their sharpest claw being the extra-long talon on their right foreleg. They're blind and near deaf so their packs hunt mostly on scent alone. They're especially attracted to the scent of metal. Despite their poor hearing, they're extremely sensitive to high-pitched sounds. The lead skullion is called the High Elder. (They are based on a mix of the skullion dragons from the books and the shivertooth dragons from the games)
  • Sliquifier aka Surf-lurker: a tidal (water) sea dragon (The surf-lurker name is based on Surflurker from Dragons: Rise of Berk)
  • Smothering Smokebreath aka Shiny-smoker: a mystery (mist) swarm dragon. The lead smokebreath is called the Duskbringer.
  • Snow Wraith aka Frost-sight: a strike (storm) land dragon
  • Specklehound aka Breeze-sniffer: a Tracker (Pursuit) Sky dragon. While they might look like ears, the antennae on their heads are actually connected to their bulbous noses and help them determine the precise direction to go while tracking a scent. They are one of the best dragons to follow while tracking something in the air since the antennae can even determine how high up something traveled by feeling the air currents. (The specklehound and breeze-sniffer names are based on specklehound dragons and sniffer dragons from the books respectively. Appearance-wise, they are based on Hiccup's stuffed dragon toy and are the size of a large dog.)
  • Speed Stinger aka Venomous-vorpent: a sharp swarm dragon. The lead stinger is called the Stripedback (The venomous-vorpent name is based on the venomous vorpent dragons from the books)
  • Spiralvin aka Typhoomerang or Pyre-twister: a stoker (inferno) sky dragon (The pyre-twister name is based on Pyre-Flier from Dragons: Rise of Berk)
  • Swiftwing aka Dolphin-swim: a strike (storm) sea dragon
  • Terrible Terror aka Common-garden: a stoker (inferno) swarm dragon. The lead terror is called the Gardener. (The common-garden name is based on the common-or-garden dragons from the books)
  • Thunderdrum aka Wave-roarer: a tidal (water) sea dragon
  • Timberjack aka Slice-wing: a sharp sky dragon (The slice-wing name is based on Axewing and Stoneslice from Dragons: Rise of Berk)
  • Twisted Nadder aka Vain-vine: a mystery (mist) swarm dragon. These dragons get their Viking names from their heads and wings, which look exactly like those of the deadly nadder, even though they're smaller than a terror and have serpentine bodies. Because of their long, rope-like bodies and their habit of sleeping piled together, the first hour of their morning routine usually involves figuring out how to untangle themselves from the rest of their swarm. The lead nadder is called the Silvertongue. (The twisted nadder name is based on the deadly nadder dragons from the books)
  • Whispering Death aka Slither-burrower: a boulder (earth) land dragon (The slither-burrower name is based on the burrowing slitherfang dragons from the books)
    • Screaming Death aka Blesssed Slither-burrower: A very rare mutation that can occur when a mother death is stressed and exposed to too much sunlight while preparing to lay her eggs. Given the circumstances, some believe the mutation developed in whispering deaths as a sort of defensive measure, suggesting it gives the child the power needed to hopefully protect the mother from whatever is causing her distress. This is similarly a belief in dragon culture, where it is seen as a blessing from Grumbar~Toril, the god of the land. The eggs of a screaming death have never been discovered, though it is currently unknown if that is due to an inability or a shared disinterest. The lack of eggs also means it is currently unknown if the mutation could be passed on. While there is some debate on how to classify these dragons among humans, they are seen as slither-burrowers by other dragons (the differences in form granting them only an honorific and no further distinction, similar to the likes of the leaders of certain species of swarm dragons). As a result, they are classified as such here.
  • Woolly Howl aka Tooth-fur: a strike (storm) swarm dragon. The lead howl is called the Squall.

An incomplete list of hybrid dragons:

  • Blizblitzer aka Frost-swim: a snow wraith/swiftwing hybrid that is a strike (storm) land dragon
  • Floehunter aka Ice-fur: a leviathorgan/woolly howl hybrid that is a strike (storm) sea dragon
  • Night Fury aka Wind-walker: a skrill/silver poltergeist hybrid that is a strike (storm) sky dragon (The wind-walker name is based on Windwalker from the Books)

The (known) dragons with a Divine Song (not including hybrids, who only occasionally inherit their Singer parent's Song):

  • Bewilderbeast - Aggressive
  • Hypnomunk - Awed
  • Red Death - Anxious
  • Silver Poltergeist - Pacified

The (known) dragons with a Seven-Tree immunity:

  • Fireworm
  • Flightmare
  • Gronckle
  • Swiftwing
