Summary
"You're disappointed in me," Ilya says when the silence drags on too long.
It snaps Irina out of her thoughts. No, she wants to say, you're my perfect boy, though she knows she shouldn't. She can't bring herself to say yes either. "You're my son," Irina says. "I love you."
"I'm sorry, Mama," he says, voice small, smaller than Irina has heard in years. He sounds like a child again, five and besieged by nightmares of a snowstorm, begging for reassurances than their house won't be buried under an insurmountable blanket of white, that she would find him and hold him even if it was.
"It's not my apology to accept, Ilyusha," she says instead.
(Irina Rozanova lives! It doesn't fix Ilya.)

Summary
In 2003, Ilya decided there was no use waiting for anyone to pick him up from his training. Thanks to that, he managed to come home earlier than he otherwise would have.
That single stroke of luck changed everything.
Ilya grumbles, "You shouldn't be smoking at all."
"I'll stop when I stop finding stashed Davidoff reds around the house."
His jaw legitimately falls to the floor. "You're going through my fucking emergency packs?!"
"Language!"
Pinching the bridge of his nose — after casting another swear when he inevitably brushes his eyebrow with the lit end to which his mother disapprovingly tuts — he breathes out and counts to ten. "You're unbelievable."
"As if you're not smoking right now."
"I'm not."
She imitates the wrong buzzer effect. Ilya can swear his eye is twitching.
"You still can't lie to me, 'Lyusha," she says fondly.

Summary
It’s not possible.
The man — the older version of her Ilyusha — reaches under the collar of his shirt and pulls out a golden necklace. He shows it to her, hope shining in his eyes.
The necklace is identical to the one she’s wearing. It doesn’t prove anything. It's the simplest Orthodox cross design, and there are tens of thousands of necklaces like this in Russia alone. But Irina knows already. A mother always recognises her child.

Summary
They're having breakfast when he tells them. He only remembers because he'd dreamed weird again last night. This time it was an older boy, who was trying to stop a little golden-haired baby from crying.
“What,” says Mom, in that flat voice she gets when she's trying not to sound surprised.
“...what?” says Dad, who clearly hadn't been listening. That's fine, Shane forgets to listen too, sometimes.
“I keep dreaming people I don't know,” Shane repeats patiently. He can be patient.
Shane Hollander habitually ends up in other people's dreams, which is fine. It's a family trait, on both sides, to slip into the dreams of the people you love. What's less fine is how Shane keeps dreaming strangers.
Or: like if a soulmates au took several detours.
