Chapter Text
The beloved daughter of the cold Hyuuga. A family shrouded in an abyss of secrecy yet her fame as the precious child of Duke Hiashi was well known throughout the kingdom.
His bride to be...
Though the Hyuuga were loyal to the crown, to him, Sasuke knew it was a matter of time before the Hyuuga would direct their all-seeing eyes towards his family, searching for any hint of weakness that would bring their downfall. Sasuke Uchiha, King of Elysia was not ignorant of the crimes committed by the Hyuuga and yet in a cruel twist of fate, the King had no power over them. They had resulted in the downfall and deaths of their many competitors, yes, but they had always acted in the interest of the royal family and Kingdom. They held no such longing for absolute supremacy in the spotlight but rather desired an unsaid, undebated power from the shadows, and there lay the issue. Sasuke was far different from his father, the late King Fugaku Uchiha. Whilst maintaining a tough sterness like his father, Sasuke was a man who didn't hold back his fiery passion, his bloodlust. He didn't play subtle mind games with his enemies, no, he destroyed them head on with no remorse or care of the consequences for he was too powerful to concern himself with such trivalties.
As such, the Hyuuga panicked, stirred, their waters thrashed, unnerved and agitated. Should Sasuke feel threatened by them, he will bring war to their doorstep and that's something they couldn't afford. Our true power must remain concealed. Our hubris cannot bring our downfall...
And so, as a show of goodwill and loyalty, Duke Hiashi proposed to Advisor Itachi, an offering of his beloved daughter to the King, to the royal family. Only a hotheaded fool would turn down such a proposition. After all, you must keep your bloodhound on a leash and force obedience, lest you get your throat torn out by their fangs. Despite being a King of bloodthirsty, fiery passion, Sasuke was no fool. His parents didn't raise a man who was at the mercy of his own emotions and so he accepted this absurd offering. Even so, he would never trust the daughter of such a calculated family. He wouldn't allow himself to.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hinata Hyuuga, the eldest daughter of Duke Hiashi Hyuuga, could never of imagined that her overly possessive father would ever let leave the estate for even a single hour, let alone indefinitely. She, of course, was not ignorant of the outside world–not entirely at least. But she had never truly seen it for herself; had never seen a willow tree in person, never witnessed the hustle and bustle of a market, never experienced certain luxuries that she could only envision thanks to her books and vivid imagination. Yet here she was, in a carriage with her Father, forbidden from soaking in every view from the window as she travelled to the capital. Being a women bred with regality, she showed no excitement on her face but to her observant Father, the innocent gleam in her eyes betrayed her joy.
"Hinata, remember, you have a duty to the King but most importantly your family. We cannot allow the unruly King to doubt us. Our family has dedicated their lives to the Kingdom for generations... we cannot allow it to be questioned." He warned with a low, calm tone.
Feeling properly reprimanded for her naive excitement, Hinata lowered her eyes. "Of course. My apologies. I'll do my best for our precious family".
Hiashi seemed satisfied with her response and hummed in response before reaching for a box to his side. He opened the box, revealing a sword with runes encrypted along the shiny blade. He presented it to his daughter whose shocked, widened, shaky eyes were reflected in the ancient metal. He placed it in her hands, his serious expression leaving her no room to argue his offering. Hinata was unable to even attempt at hiding her emotions this time–her crest fallen expression was etched into every smooth line of her face.
'For him to give me such a thing...'
"You will keep this by your side and use it if need be. Do I make myself clear?" He instructed.
Hinata emptied her expression and lowered her face, accepting the sword as she nodded and whispered a small "yes". She knew that for her father to make her take this sword meant only one thing... he knew she would likely have to use it. Her throat felt constricted as dizziness overtook her but she must not show weakness. The Hyuuga have to remain as calm as a lake so that nobody could predict their storms.
They arrived at the capital and as much as Hinata longed to soak in the new, inconceivable scenery, she knew she had a duty and an image to uphold. So with her head held high and her eyes lowered, she followed the Duke as they were escorted to the King.
Once they reached the hall, she could feel the eyes of everyone watching, scrutinising her. She knew in that moment that their stares lacked the omniscience of her family's eyes, but the points of their attentions pricked her skin regardless–still she remained outwardly calm.
"Your Majesty, may your flames blaze for eternity", her Father greeted and it was only when the King spoke that she felt her heart beating with anxiety.
"Duke Hiashi, it's been awhile..." his voice, low and smooth was not what she expected. She actually had no idea what to expect, but a calm controlled voice was definitely not it. She then felt it. His stare. It was unlike the prickling stare of the other people in the hall and it was completely unlike the cold, calculating assessing of her family–it was searing. She had no time for pondering as he continued.
"I assume that this woman is your daughter", he stated indifferently, almost as if he was bored. It was then that she raised her gaze to see him for the very first time. His ebony hair matched his obsidian eyes. For a man lit by the flames of the Uchiha family, he seemed like a man darkened by shadows. Even his armour and clothing were an amalgamation of blacks and navys–he was the personification of the night sky. She could tell, he was a man of large stature for even as he sat on the ornate throne, he sat perfectly comfortable, as if it was made specifically for a man above all others. She glanced at the throne beside his. Her throne... the one she would have to sit at. Try as she might, she couldn't visualise herself sitting there, belonging there. Perhaps it would swallow her whole should she try.
Her father's voice interrupted her frantic pondering. "Yes, Your Majesty".
Sasuke's eyes trailed back to Hiashi and he paused before speaking again. "Let's discuss our matters in my office" he gestured a maid towards them before continuing "in the meantime I'll have the lady escorted and shown around the palace". Being his daughter, Hinata was the only one who saw the miniscule narrow of Hiashi's eyes. He definitely was not happy with such a proposition yet he conceded. Hinata couldn't fathom how her Father was going to handle her living in the palace, if he hated even being separated from her for a moment. Yet she knew why he would try. It's his duty. It's her duty. And so she followed the gentle looking maid as she was escorted to a room.
Once they reached the room, the maid faced her and any gentleness was instantly erased. Her turquoise eyes were cold and distant as she regarded her, even as she maintained a polite and professional expression.
With an almost melodic voice that conflicted with her empty tone she spoke. "My Lady, this is to be your chambers. Please make yourself comfortable and inform me of anything you may need".
Whilst on the surface she was being hospitable, Hinata could see through her facade. This woman didn't like her. She was supposed to be shown around the palace so she could get acquainted with the place that would become her new home however, this maid seemed determined to only be near her for as much as was necessary by her duty. Hinata kept that thought to herself though as she didn't really mind any of it enough to voice.
With her gentle voice, she spoke up for the first time since arriving, eventhough a nod would've been enough to dismiss a mere maid.
"Thank you for your help. May I ask you name?" She inquired. She thought such a question was not so odd but it apparently was as the woman's eyes widened with shock before resuming her professionally natural expression.
"My name is Ino My Lady", she responded but Hinata could hear the slight inflection in her tone indicating... awe? Surely asking for a person's name didn't indicate such a reaction however Hinata was just happy at Ino's response to her not being one of concealed distaste. Perhaps she shouldnt be surprised, considering the few maids she was sorrounded with growing up in the Hyuuga estate, would've reacted similarly. She thanked Ino with a smile before Ino dismissed herself.
With nothing else to do Hinata could finally express her nervous excitement. She walked around the large room, exploring every nook and cranny. She was particularly entranced by the mirror, the bathtub in the bathroom but most of all... The bed! She has such a huge bed for herself? Surely there was no need for such a huge bed if she were to be sleeping in it alone. But that was when an electrifying realisation struck her.
'I won't be sleeping in it alone...', she thought panically as her hands began to tremble. She had never even slept in the same room as another person before and now, suddenly, she would have to sleep next to a stranger? Although she was anxious at such a prospect, she began to feel a calm sense of joy.
'Having someone next to me at nighttime might be nice'
In order to escape her conflicting emotions, she decided to explore the balcony. She opened the door and exhaled a refreshed sigh. The gentle breeze caressed her face as her hair danced in the wind. She closed her eyes to savour the feeling for awhile before opening them and allowing herself to finally relish in the view of the outdoors. An abundance of trees stood proudly before her and she appreciated how each of their branches grew freely. They clearly were not trimmed and contracted to a single shape–each tree was its own unique individual. In the distance, something caught her sight.
She gripped the balcony edge, leaning forward so she could be even a centimeter closer to that sight. She knew her all-seeing eyes couldn't be mistaken and yet she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"A willow tree...", she reverently whispered. Her eyes sparkled and she hoped that she would be allowed to see it up close soon. Finally, she could touch the very tree she saw in her favourite book in person! She no longer had to wonder if it looked better in reality because now she knew... it's even more majestic in person!
Perhaps her new life in the palace would be wonderful after all.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Hiashi and his daughter were brought to him, Sasuke recalled the last time he saw Hiashi–10 years ago. Although Sasuke knew he himself had changed, he also knew Hiashi hadn't. He looked exactly the same. Each crease in his face had remained exactly the same as they did then; they didn't get deeper with age and no new ones joined them. Perhaps the Hyuuga stoic expression, prevented any wrinkles from appearing. Perhaps they remained cold statues until their deaths. Yes, Duke Hiashi was exactly what he was expecting. His daughter on the other hand was not. Her face inherited the Hyuuga smoothness, yet her face, no, her entire being seemed to carry a softness that he was not expecting.
'She can't be a Hyuuga... Can she?', He thought to himself.
Even the way she carried herself seemed unlike the few other Hyuuga's he met. Unlike her younger sister Hanabi who carried herself with a withheld, smug sense of pride, this woman held her head high and kept her eyes low. How strange. Even with her lids hiding her eyes, he could tell that they were also different to other Hyuuga's. They were not icy and empty, they were a soft lilac with a glow that seemed almost warm. How very strange.
When she finally lifted her gaze to look at him, his thoughts were proved correct–unfortunately. He didn't miss the way her eyes flickered to the Queen's throne before returning to him but strangely enough he couldn't detect any lust for power in her. He did detect something else, but what was it? It almost seemed melancholic... It didn't matter! He would not allow such a suspicious woman, a Hyuuga, to trick him into lowering his guard–even for a moment. Once the woman was escorted away by Ino, he walked with Hiashi to his office. He sat by his desk as Hiashi sat opposite him. It was time to get to business.
Hiashi passed him a document that his daughter had already signed in her blood (the marriage certificate). Without a single word, Sasuke pricked his finger and signed the form.
It was done. No fancy wedding, no celebration, not even a nice dinner because this was not a happy occasion... it was a political transaction.
"So that's the famed Hyuuga daughter I've heard so much about. I am curious though... if she's your eldest, why are you giving her to me? Shouldn't she be the one to inherit your position?", He drawled in feigned disinterest. Sasuke was not a man of facades, even so, he knew that he had to be careful when interacting with a man who you cannot trust, but need.
Hiashi wasted no time as he responded. "Hinata was always a delicate child. I feared she wouldn't be able to handle such a role with her gentle disposition and so her younger sister Hanabi seemed to be a better fit". His voice then lowered with the sterness that Sasuke recognised his late Father would sometimes embrace. "Despite that, do not be mistaken into thinking she would not be suitable as a Queen. She is a child who knows her duty and knows how to support you with yours. It's true that I have prepared Hanabi to take over my position when the time came, but I still raised Hinata with all the teachings that would make her a political asset to you and our Kingdom".
'How interesting, 'our Kingdom' huh?', Sasuke internally criticised. Either Hiashi used such wording to display his patriotism, or to undermine Sasuke's position as King. How very clever. How very... Hyuuga. Hiding their true intentions with ambiguous wording. Even so, this is was what Sasuke expected and thus knew how to navigate.
"Of course. I expect no less. Now let's move on to other pressing matters. I'm sure you're already well aware of the alliance that will be signed with The Kaivira Kingdom" Hiashi nodded and so Sasuke continued, "though it is a mutually beneficial agreement proposing trading between us both, I suspect there is more to it than that".
Hiashi hummed in thought, "I agree. My informants in Kaivira reported back to me the day before the alliance was brought forth to you. They suspect the Kaivira royal family to be colluding with a group of mercenaries for over a month now. I suspect they plan to use this alliance to lower our guards".
Sasuke nodded in agreement but once again noticed a small detail... 'our guards'. Hiashi was insinuating that Kaivira feared not only the King but the Hyuuga too. That in itself was not such a preposterous suggestion as the Hyuuga were feared everywhere for their mystery and power. However, on the off chance that Hiashi was attempting to assert his dominace over the King, Sasuke knew he was a dangerous ally that he had to keep in control.
"I'm counting on you to keep an eye on them. Contrary to popular belief I don't enjoy going to war at every opportunity. Against a larger opponent, I prefer to plan effectively. I see no reason to guide my men to early graves when I can wait to strike".
The Hyuuga weren't the only ones to coat their words with ambiguity. Hiashi could see Sasuke had that skill too. He may be referring to Kaivira but Hiashi could tell that Sasuke was subtley warning him too.
It seemed this marriage was indeed the only chance at building trust with the royal family.
"I agree with your assessment, Your Majesty", Hiashi then raised from his seat, "I will now excuse myself and bid my daughter farewell before returning home. I suspect I'll be receiving more reports from Kaivira soon".
Sasuke nodded and as Hiashi approached the door, he paused. Without turning he made one last request before leaving the office. Please... watch over my daughter.
Sasuke subdued his shock as he agreed–Hiashi has never asked anyone of anything. Even if Hiashi's head was turned away, Sasuke would not allow the Hyuuga eyes catch even the slightest crack in his expression. Regardless, Hiashi's request was unnecessary. After all, Sasuke planned to watch over the Hyuuga daughter... very closely.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
After afew minutes of reading through various reports, Sasuke could feel his usual migraines thrumming his head. He exited his office for some fresh air. His body was getting tense as the pain tormented him but then he saw her. The Hyuuga daughter appeared on the balcony, her arms holding her body as if she was self-soothing. Once she lifted her gaze from her feet and directed it into the distance, he saw her demeanor shift. Her entire body relaxed as she rested her hands on the balcony frame. Her hair was not the usual brown or black of the Hyuuga but rather a midnight blue that looked like silk as it flowed behind her. Her head slightly tilted as a small smile appeared. Sasuke was completely caught off guard.
'She is definitely unlike any other Hyuuga' he thought with almost a sense of relief before catching himself. No! She's a Hyuuga! They couldn't be trusted no matter what!
He narrowed his gaze at her, seeking anything that would affirm his right to suspicion. She then flinched and turned to face him. He saw her eyes roaming him entirely before softening. What on earth? She swiftly schooled her expression, inclined her head in a small bow and entered back into his, no, their chambers. He didn't know what to make of her and that somehow made her even more... dangerous.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
After Hinata bid Hiashi farewell she paced worriedly. Surely he was mistaken! How could she be suitable to be the King's wife. But, if Hiashi believed she could do it then it must be so. After all, he was always right. Still, she had lived her entire life in the Hyuuga estate, how could she possibly be Queen of an entire Kingdom? She had alot of work to do if she wanted to make him proud. She had to do this... even if she was terrified. The pressure and self-doubt began to consume her so she decided to bask in the new sight she discovered. She exited to the balcony once again, hugging herself to calm her raging thoughts. She looked up and saw that beautiful scene. The willow tree... it overlooked a calm lake. Being a Hyuuga, the only family of water mages, she was trained in the arts of water magic and so developed a deep respect for it. She began to imagine being right before it. Maybe she could lean against the willow and watch the lake sparkle from sunlight. Maybe she could read and smell the grass surrounding her. Maybe she could dance on the water. Maybe she could sing... freely.
Such prospects filled her with joyful hope but then her skin felt that familiar scorching heat. He was watching. She turned her gaze and as she suspected, the King was observing, no, glaring at her. Did she do something wrong? Why did he seem almost, disgusted? She looked over him from her elevated position and saw the tension in his muscles. He was clearly in pain and perhaps seeing the woman that he essentially had to marry for political reasons made everything worse. She felt her soul soften with sympathy.
'He's clearly already in pain and I'm just making everything worse', she thought morosely. She decided to spare him and bowed before returning back to their chambers. She couldn't help but feel guilt. She was clearly a burden. That much didn't surprise her and yet it hurt just he same. Perhaps for the first time ever, Hiashi was wrong... She wouldn't be able to fulfill her duty.
To distract herself, Hinata decided to change out of her light pink gown into something abit more comfortable. She felt out of place in such a dress. It seemed far too beautiful for someone like her and such a colour was drained of its softness when forced to collide with her pale skin and dark hair. She felt much more comfortable in her navy dress. Her cleavage was no longer visible at all and her arms were fully covered. Much better. It was hard standing in the hall, in the presence of others. Perhaps her paranoia was drawing false conclusions, but she couldn't help but feel like she was being judged. Maybe they were judging the size of her chest, or her pale skin, or how she ruined such a beautiful dress by wearing it. Regardless, she felt much more at ease in her current gown that framed her body nicely yet hid everything unsightly.
She approached the bed, longing to lie down on it when she heard a knock at the door. Ino entered and bowed, telling her that dinner was prepared before listing every course. With every syllable, Hinata began feel her palms sweat and her heart race.
"I'm so sorry Ino, but would it be okay if I skipped dinner? I'm not particularly hungry... will His Majesty be offended?" She asked timidly.
Ino narrowed her eyes in thought before ensuring that the King would not be upset, before leaving. As Ino left to inform Sasuke, she allowed herself to contemplate the Lady Hyuuga's strange behaviour. Never in her life had she ever encountered a noblewoman who genuinely wanted to know a maid's name and who spoke to said maid as if she were an equal.
How odd.
Now that she thought about it, the lady was wearing a different dress. She didn't call on her to help her change so that must mean she changed herself.
How very odd.
Nevertheless, she had a duty to upheed and she would do just that. She entered the dining hall where Sasuke was already seated. He met her eyes and she could see the question in them.
She bowed, "Lady Hyuuga has expressed that she wasn't hungry and hopes you aren't offended". Sasuke clearly seemed suspicious and that was proven to be a correct assessment by his next words.
"I see. Report. What have you gathered of her so far?", He lowly questioned.
"I must admit, she has left me perplexed. She is unlike any noble lady I've ever met before... she is gentle and soft- maybe too much. She speaks to me as if we are equals. She changes her clothes herself. She asked for my name. She apologised for not being hungry. Honestly... she seems convincingly genuine"
That didn't seem to be what Sasuke wanted to hear as he glared at nothing in particular, clearly contemplating what was going on. Ino then remembered something strange she did notice.
"Your Majesy", that got his attention, "I'm not sure of this is useful but it was something I found strange". Sasuke gestured for her to continue and so she did, "I may be wrong but Lady Hyuuga seemed strangely afraid at the prospect of eating. When I informed her of dinner, I could see how anxious she was but I admit that I have no idea why".
Sasuke took all of it in before responding, "I see. Good work. Keeping watching her closely and report anything unusual to me".
Ino agreed, bowed and excused herself. Sasuke continued to contemplate and came to two possible reasons. Either she was anxious to eat food not prepared by her own Hyuuga chefs–the Hyuuga were meticulous when it came to their servants–or she didn't trust the royal palace... didn't trust him. He wasn't sure which conclusion was the right one but he supposed it didn't matter. Her strange anxiety didn't give away her true goals.
Well, it was time he confronted his new wife himself and get some answers.
He approached her chambers and dismissed Ino who was standing outside it, as her job demanded, with a nod. He entered and there she was, on the edge on the bed holding a sword before her with tears streaming down her face. When she noticed his presence she quickly wiped her tears and placed the sword on the bed before rising.
She regained that familiar posture, head raised and eyes lowered.
"Your Majesty. Please forgive me for letting you see me in such a state"
Her voice was exactly what he expected and yet nothing like what he expected. She was soft spoken yes, but he did not expect her voice to be so gentle, so sweet, so... sad? Even her voice was unlike any Hyuuga's–unlike any woman's for that matter. Oh, she was definitely dangerous. Sasuke shifted his attention to the blade. What could a lady like her, be doing with such a weapon?
"What is that?", He questioned. She followed his gaze to the sword before tilting her head with confusion evident on her face.
"It's a sword, Your Majesty", she replied with no sense of mock or malice. She seemed utterly perplexed at the idea that Sasuke Uchiha didn't know what a sword was.
Sasuke raised his eyebrows in mild amusement. "I know that, I mean why do you have one?"
Hinata blushed in embarrassment, heightening his amusement. "Of course. My apologies Your Majesty. My Father gifted it to me as a wedding present".
Any sense of amusement was erased from Sasuke's demeanor. He became guarded, as he should've been the very moment he entered the chambers. How ridiculous! He let his guard down, and right before her no less. How infuriating! He grunted and approached her. He could see her tense, no doubt intimidated by his glare but he wouldn't back down.
"I will only say this once. We are to be married but frankly I never wanted anything to do with you. I have my duty so I will fulfill it. However... I don't trust you. So stay out of my way", he calmly warned. He didn't allow himself to feel guilt at the hurt and confused expression on Hinata's face. He wouldn't lower his guard before a potential enemy again.
Softly yet hesitantly, Hinata voiced out her ravenous thoughts. "I... I understand, Your Majesty. But please... tell me what I have done for you to be so wary of me. If I offended you before by-"
Sasuke interrupted her, not keen on hearing her convincingly guilt ridden apologies over missing a simple meal.
"No. I don't care about that". He paused to darken his glare at her as his lips twisted to a sneer, "it's the simple fact that you are a Hyuuga". Her lips thinned and for their first time since they met, she lowered her head slightly, hiding every expression she may be emoting at that moment.
Was she concealing her fury at his audaciousness? He wasn't sure.
She then lifted her head, a frown tugging at her lips as she scrunched her brows in confusion. She looked, strangely, more like a sad puppy than an angry, spoiled noble lady.
"Your Majesty, I don't understand. The Hyuuga have always been loyal. That's the reason I'm here in the first place. Father has never let me leave the estate so he could always watch over me yet he brought me to you, away from him, so that a true mutual trust could be established", she tried to reason.
Sasuke seemed to accept her reasoning as his cautious glare relaxed. Even so, his expression was far from soft, far from warm. It was... cold and empty. Sasuke knew it would be bad if Hinata ran to daddy dearest and told him of Sasuke's suspicions towards the Hyuuga, so he decided to navigate the situation accordingly.
"I know. The Hyuuga have always been loyal and I expect them to continue to remain so. However... I'm no fool. A family as powerful as yours"–her head slightly lowered again–"are the ones with the power to truly betray me if I'm not careful. Just as you were brought here as a sign of trust, I agreed to the agreement due to trust. But as King, I can't afford to fully indulge powerful allies. I won't."
Sasuke analysed the woman before him, he couldn't see her face but her bodylanguage gave alot away. Despite her hands being gently clasped before her, her hand was picking at the skin of her thumb frantically. Judging from the old scabbing wounds there, he suspected this was a habit of hers. How pathetic. How could someone so weak be his Queen? She kept picking at the skin, oblivious to the blood she was drawing and Sasuke had to hold himself back from stopping her. She stopped to face him again.
"I understand your reasoning, Your Majesty. But once we married, I no longer belonged to the Hyuuga but to you instead. I had always thought that when two people married, surely they would- that they would feel-"
Sasuke had no desire to hear her ignorantly sprout useless fairytales of romantic love. It was never going to happen, if he had any say in the matter. Of course, he had no idea that she wasn't thinking of such things whatsoever; all Hinata thought was that married people trusted each other to remain loyal, regardless of where they came from before being united.
He once again interrupted, "like I said I never wanted anything to do with you. Don't delude yourself with notions of romance. You will be my wife but that's it. As long as you act accordingly, that's enough". He wasn't sure whether he wanted revenge against the oblivious woman for weakening his guard for even a moment or whether he wanted to drive his point home as he let his next words slip carelessly out of his mouth.
"I will never love someone like you", he spoke with venomous anger coating his words. This time however, the guilt he kept at bay struck his chest at the sight before him. Her body was stiff, her clasped hands tensed and her face... it was absolutely crushed. Her eyes were glazed and he began to panic at the thought of her tears spilling. Of course, no such emotions were indicated on his face apart the slight furrows of his brows. But then something unusually chilling happened. Hinata's entire body drooped, her arms hung at her sides but what truly struck Sasuke was her eyes. Her lilac eyes that seemed to constantly carry a gentle warmth were now hollow and empty. In that moment, Sasuke wished she would finally reveal her true Hyuuga icy cold state. If she did, he would feel justified in his distrust, justified in his cruel treatment but alas, this was worse. Her empty resignation had him slowly clenching his fists. He opened his mouth to speak, unsure of what to say but determined to say something.
For the first time during this conversation, Hinata beat him to it. "Of course, Your Majesty. Believe me, I had no preconceptions of such fantasies. I only want the bond between the Hyuuga and the Uchiha to be solidified", she paused and stepped closer to the King, who was shaken far more than he would ever express or admit. Her eyes then softened almost apologetically and Sasuke frowned in confusion. If anyone should be apologetic it should be him, shouldn't it?
"I'm so sorry, Your Majesty. I know you never truly wanted to marry me. But I promise... I'll do my best to not burden you and heed your wishes"
When she bowed her head to showcase her sincerity, Sasuke felt an inexplicable fury flood him. His already clenched fists further tightened, his nails biting skin. He muttered a gruff "fine" before exiting to return to his office, leaving a concerned Hinata behind.
He briskly walked, feeling his anger consume him, however this time it was towards himself. He knew he was being unfairly harsh towards her. But she easily shattered his pride with the way she effortlessly invaded his mind, the way she effortlessly made him act in a way that was unfamiliar to him for even a second. He knew he was being petty; she was forced into this marriage just as much, if not more than he was. But the few short (almost miniscule) moments where he felt out of control of his own mind scared him and so he directed that anger towards her. He needed to feel in control again. And he did but it didn't feel as good as he was hoping.
What if he was wrong about her?
He needed more information.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasuke summoned itachi, Ino and his most trusted comrades to his office and folded his hands before his face. His stern expression told them that this wasn't a casual check-in.
His Generals stood proudly before him. Shikamaru Nara, head of the strategic division was a lazy man with a lazy gait. But evenso, his genius was nothing to scoff at. Next to him was Sakura Haruno, head of the medical division. A bright woman with a lean build, long pastel pink hair and piercing green eyes. A woman of undeniable strength and determination. She was a woman Sasuke felt extremely conflicted about. Next to her was Naruto Uzumaki, his military right-hand man. Naruto was general of the main army, with his strength and charisma, he guided his men to the forefront of battles. Despite his friendly face and bright hair, Naruto was intimidating in his own right. After all, his strength was only second to Sasuke himself. Finally, was the man Sasuke easily relied on the most... Neji Hyuuga. Head of the assassination and reconnaissance force, Neji Hyuuga was a mystery to everyone apart from Sasuke. Although he was a trusted comrade of the other generals, Neji was shrouded in mystery not just because of his role but because of his heritage. A Hyuuga... when Neji was not in the presence of the trusted few, he wore a mask to conceal his face from others.
When he first turned up to the capital 15 years ago, the royal family were utterly perplexed. However he proved himself to them with everything he had and it paid off. Sasuke and Itachi were the only people left who knew the true reason for his defection from his family–for his existence entirely. With long brown hair and the eyes of the Hyuuga, Neji was naturally the most suited for his role as Sasuke's shadow but he knew this new marriage with Hinata would be something he would have to be careful navigating. She couldn't know he was alive... no Hyuuga could.
Seeing Sasuke's grim expression, Itachi (his, der brother and advisor) voiced everyone's thoughts.
"So, what did you summon us for? Is this about the Hyuuga?"
They got their answer from Sasuke's jaw clenching as he lowered his arms to cross them before his chest.
"Yes. I don't know what to make of it. Hiashi strangely enough requested I take care of his daughter. And she... I don't know what to make of her. She is unlike any Hyuuga, even unlike Neji and honestly that makes her hard to analyse. In other words... she dangerous, at least until we can figure out her true intentions. So far, Ino has watched her and will continue to do so but-", he directed her eyes to Neji, "Neji what can you recall of her from your time as a Hyuuga?"
Neji's eyes glazed as he gathered all of his memories. He murmured, "she was completely sheltered by Hiashi. So much so that she was basically a mystery to the majority of the family. I wasn't allowed to interact with her very much but from I remember, she was gentle. Too gentle for a Hyuuga. She was timid yet overly polite to even the few servants around her. I remember that she was extremely clingy and teared up when I had to leave her alone. But we were children then so I don't know how useful such information is", he finished and Sasuke could tell it was hard for Neji to speak of his past. He could see the guilt in Neji's eyes as he spoke of his cousin but of course only Sasuke and Itachi, who were well versed in Neji's stoicism, could decipher his minute expressions. Sakura then spoke up, her voice controlled but evidently sceptical.
"So she was a spoiled lady with an overbearing father. But still, I don't think this helps us in understanding her at all"
Ino began to feel annoyance at Sakura's words, despite hating the Hyuuga, especially Hiashi for her own reasons, Ino felt inexplicably protective of the soft, meek lady who spoke to her like an equal.
She argued, "I don't think so. I suspect that for the most part she hasn't changed much. From what I've seen, she is too gentle, too timid and unnecessarily polite. Evenso, you're right. We need more information".
Sasuke accepted her argument with a nod before watching Shikamaru. He knew his genius strategist had caught onto something and was going through every possibility in his mind; his furrowed brows and unique concentration tic was what gave him away. Once he was done, Sasuke asked him for his opinion.
"I'm not sure I buy the whole 'over-protective' father shtick", he regarded Neji, "Neji, you said she was basically a secret to the whole family. That seems odd to me. I could be wrong but she seems more like a caged pet than a precious daughter. And why her? Hanabi is his heir yet he puts all of his effort into concealing and worrying about the supposed 'spare'. Either she is his secret weapon that he kept hidden or..."
Neji prompted him to continue but Shikamaru shrugged and replied, "I won't make my second assement until I see her for myself", which displeased everyone greatly.
Sasuke considered Shikamaru's reasoning but then the sword Hiashi gifted his daughter visualised in his mind and so he questioned Neji on it.
"Neji, tell me, Hyuugas don't use swords so what would it mean if they had one"
Neji furrowed his brows as he lowly answered, "it means that either they were too weak to use our occular magic or... they were expected to use the sword to kill themselves and seal their eyes forever", he finished darkly. Sasuke's eyes widened in shock before narrowing.
Neji continued, "this method of sealing is only done by the main family who have no way of protecting their eyes and thus their secrets when they die. However, if the blade is indeed for that purpose, I would need to see it myself to confirm".
Sasuke nodded and stood with stone hard determination. He gestured for everyone to follow him as he led them to her.
Without so much as a knock he entered her room and found her on the floor rummaging through her bag. When she looked up at him she beamed. That was definitely not the reaction he was expecting. He expected her to be angry, cautious, maybe fearful but certainly not happy–especially after their previous interaction. He also wasn't expecting his shoulders to relax but once again he had no control over his reactions when it came to her. How infuriating.
She lifted herself off the ground and raised a small bag cradled in her palms to him.
"Your Majesty. Earlier from the balcony, I noticed how tense you were and you looked to be in pain. Please take this, it's a soothing bag I made and it can help with headaches and relaxation so-", she ashamedly paused her rambling when she saw his expression remain emotionless and deadpan. Her embarrassment was short-lived as Sasuke ushered in Ino and a group of other individuals. She suspected the man who looked somewhat like Sasuke was his elder brother and advisor, Itachi, but she had no idea who any of the others were. She lowered her offering with confusion and felt anxiety rack her body as she looked at the masked figure (Neji) before her. Sasuke suspected she was simply shocked at all of these strangers appearing out of nowhere but he was wrong... very wrong.
Hinata's arms went limp, the bag she held now lying on the floor. That was certainly unexpected. Sasuke was about to question her when in the blink of an eye she charged at Neji and ripped off his mask. Everyone in the room stood frozen, in complete and utter shock at how this tiny woman moved with such deadly precision, catching even Neji, Sasuke and Itachi off guard. She dropped the mask to the ground and a powerful magic energy suddenly suffocated the entire room. Any other person would've collapsed under the pressure, feeling as though they were drowning in a raging sea.
It was then that they saw it, her byakugan. The prized treasure of the Hyuuga, the all-seeing eyes. They glowed as veins protuded from her temples. She scrutinised Neji with an unreadable expression. Before quietly asking him who he was. She couldn't fathom what a Hyuuga was doing in the capital!
Neji looked at Sasuke in silent question and he simply nodded. Damn. He really didn't want Hinata to find out about him this way, or any way for that matter. How did she sense his magic anyways? He made sure to keep it suppressed.
He slightly sighed before looking back at his cousin.
"Lady Hyuuga. I'm... Neji Hyuuga", he revealed and her magic surged even further. It felt like they were being scolded by hot water! Yes, she was definitely unlike any Hyuuga, for their magic was cold, merciless, not... whatever this was. She took a single step forward. Naruto and Sakura's instincts kicked in as they each grabbed one of her arms. She was definitely dangerous.
In a split second, her magic disabled both of their arms, as she grabbed Neji's neck and shoved him into the wall. Neji knew he could have disabled her arms and freed himself but he felt he owed it to her to let her express her frustrations. After all, he did break his promise...
With a low soft voice that conflicted with her harsh tone, the Hyuuga spoke.
"How dare you. How dare you disguise yourself as a Hyuuga. But even more so... how dare you mock my brother's name with your filthy deciet". Her trembling hands tightened around his throat but Neji still refused to fight back. He just continued to look at her with gentle, apologetic eyes.
On Sasuke's orders, Shikamaru intervened, using his shadow magic to contrict her movements and force her away from Neji. She tried fighting against his magic but it was useless.
"Lady Hina, I'm sorry..."
Hinata froze, her eyes deactivated and stared at Neji. Sasuke questioned if she was even concious but the tears running down her face and her body relaxing assured him she was awake. Once he sensed all fight leave her, Shikamaru released her.
With a trembling voice Hinata quietly sobbed, grabbing her hair as if she was trying to wake herself up.
"Brother... this can't be real! I thought you were dead!"
Neji had no idea what to do so he simply pat her head–like he used when they were younger–and she hugged him tightly, as if she were afraid he would disappear should she let go. Neji was never one for physical affection so he kept his hand on her head until she calmed down. Once she did, reality came crashing down on her.
"Y-Your Majesty, I'm so sorry. Please understand- I'm so confused!", She pleaded, wiping her shameful tears away.
"I know. It's fine. However, right now I need something from you", he responded.
Hinata relax with relief and titled her head, curious of what he could want. When he revealed he wanted to see her sword, she stiffened.
"The answer we suspect is already obvious after seeing her byakugan. However, confirmation is always good", Shikamaru drawled out.
She turned to Neji in slight panic and he softened. "Please Lady Hinata", he beseeched. She slightly lowered her head once again. Sasuke began to suspect she developed this habit to hide her emotions since she was clearly far too expressive for a Hyuuga. Seeing as she remained unmoving, Sasuke spoke.
"Hyuuga. You said your family is loyal so prove it to me". His demand proved to be effective as she moved lifelessly and unsheathed the blade. She brought it before Sasuke and made Neji confirm. It was infact the seppuku blade.
Shikamaru approached her and respectfully inclined his head in a small bow before gently speaking.
"Lady Hyuuga. Why would your father expect you to commit seppuku?"
Hinata softly clasped her hands before her and softened her eyes at the lazy genius.
"Please forgive me Sir but I think you may be mistaken. Since Brother Neji is here, I can safely assume you know what this sword is for. But Father gave it to me for protection. I have no form of protection on my eyes and I'm no longer at the estate where I'm fully safe. This blade-", she looked at her reflection in the metal, "is the only way that my Father could protect my magic from others who would want to steal it".
Sasuke felt wrongly accused and offended. "Are you implying your Father doesn't trust me to keep you safe?", He questioned gruffly.
She turned to fully face him and her warm expression had his anger ebbing away. "No, Your Majesty. But you have no Hyuuga here, at least that we knew of, so the chances of someone acting against you behind your back are much more likely. Our traditions stress the importance of protecting our powers. It's because of those reasons that he provided me this safety net", she assured.
She felt Shikamaru watching her and turned her face to regard him. "Is something wrong Sir?", She kindly asked.
Shikamaru sighed with exhaustion. "My Lady. Excuse my presumptuousness but... would you say Duke Hiashi loves you?"
She flinched at the question and scrunched her brows. She inhaled slightly before relaxing her face and revealing a tiny smile.
"I understand your doubt Sir, but I assure you, my Father cares for me deeply. I... I'm a failure as a Hyuuga which is the real reason he–the real reason I was isolated. In his way, he was protecting me"
He nodded and didn't pursue it any further. Sasuke was about to speak himself when Hinata abruptly dropped her sword and clutched her shoulder, her nails digging deep into the fabric. She could barely hold back her wince. Ino rushed to her side asking her what was wrong.
"I'm okay Ino, I'm sorry for worrying you. My body is really weak and using so much magic with no restraint, causes me pain. But... I'm okay", she panted and gave a smile to further reassure everyone.
"We'll leave now so call on Ino if you need anything", Sasuke said with almost a sense softness but Hinata assumed the pain was making her delirious. Regardless, she nodded and waited until everyone exited before falling to her knees. She was lucky nobody saw her back and that her long hair hid anything they might have seen should her back have been visible for a single moment.
Dammit, one small truth and her body was reacting so strongly!
'What am I going to do?'
She peeled off her dress and moved her hair out of the way. Unfortunately for her, Ino entered at the worst moment.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Lady Hyuuga, I brought you-"
Ino had simply entered after no response from her knock in the hopes of preparing the Lady's bath. She felt sympathy for the poor girl who must've had a very hard day. She had no idea of what to make of what she was seeing. Lady Hyuuga was kneeling on the floor and looking up at her with an overwhelming sense of fear, trembling like a leaf in unsteady winds. What was mostly shocking was... her back. Thick scars covered her entire back, no bit of smooth skin was left unmarked and horrifically, blood was seeping from the open wounds.
'How could all of this have happened in the 5 minutes I was away?', Ino internally scolded. She didn't even realise she had dropped the tray of bath oils before she rushed to the Hyuuga.
She reached her hands out in the hopes of stopping the bleeding.
"My Lady, what hap-"
Ino could finish her sentence as Hinata scurried back panting unevenly. She looked like a feral caged animal. Her gaze were shaking in fear, as if she was looking at a demon. Ino slowly got up and approached her in the hopes of calming her down.
"My Lord, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please don't- please don't h-hurt me! I swear I didn't mean to tell them that so please-", she begged with tearful eyes. Was she hallucinating? Nevermind, she would worry about that later. For now, calming down the lady was her priority.
With a stern tone Ino spoke. "Lady Hyuuga, listen to me. I'm Ino, your maid. We need to clean you up. Now".
Hinata eyes finally focused on her and sanity seemed to regain over her face. Once she realised Ino found out her secret, her heart hammered in her chest.
"Ino please! I know it's selfish of me to ask but please... don't tell anyone of what you saw, especially His Majesty. Please..."
Ino contemplated. She really should report this to Sasuke. However, she couldn't even guess how he would react. Perhaps it would be better to bide her time and gather more intel so she could provide a more developed report. Yes, that's what she would do.
"I understand My Lady. For now though, please allow me to help you clean up. I brought bath oils that help with relaxation and I can heal your wounds for you" Hinata looked dejectedly to the ground and nodded before shakily getting up. Ino guided her to the bathroom and once the tub was filled, helped her get inside.
"Um Ino? ...Why are you helping me? I was under the impression you didn't like me very much", Hinata meakly asked.
Ino knew she shouldn't have been surprised at Hinata's observant deductions but she was. After all, why would Hinata treat Ino with respect if she could sense her initial distaste? What a strange Hyuuga.
Ino sighed, "to be honest I didn't initially... I hate the Hyuuga, no, I hate Hiashi and so I automatically despised you"–Hinata tightened her grip on her knees–"but... you are too nice for me to hate and so I felt guilty. If I can make it up to you by helping, then I will", she finished fondly. She found that every word she said was true, though she couldn't fathom what possessed her to speak so freely. Maybe that's the kind of effect Lady Hyuuga had on everyone.
Hinata faced her and whispered gratefully, "thank you, Ino. But please don't be so harsh on yourself. I don't blame you at all". Ino simply smiled in response and Hinata blushed before glancing at her fidgeting hands.
Hesitantly, Hinata spoke, "Ino?", She hummed and so Hinata continued, "will you, um–would you like to be my friend?".
She asked so quietly Ino almost didn't hear her. But she did. Her eyes widened in shock and she didn't even know what to say. Hinata was unnerved by her silence and quickly added, "of course, you don't have to. I didn't mean to pressure you". Ino began to laugh hysterically with tears in her eyes. Hinata turned her face to look at her and titled her head in curiosity.
'Dammit, she's so cute! How can I refuse such a strange Lady?'.
Once Ino had calmed down she smiled at Hinata, "My Lady, are you sure to want a maid for a friend?", And watched fondly as her brows scrunched and she pouted in confusion.
"Of course, Ino. Besides, what's wrong with being a maid? I think you're incredible. I mean, maid's have so many skills I can only dream of having. I think it's very lovely"
Ino considered before regaining her warm smile.
"Well then", she presented her hand to Hinata, "Hi! My name is Ino. Would you like to be friends?". Hinata beamed with the brightest smile she had ever seen and happily took her hand, "of course! Lovely to meet you Ino, I'm Hinata" and the two girls shook.
Once she was done bathing, Hinata changed into her night gown herself as she excitedly asked Ino the most unusual questions. 'Have you seen the trees with flowers?', 'do you like willow trees?', 'how big are butterflies?
Honestly, just how sheltered had Hiashi kept his daughter? Either way, Ino answered every question with giddiness. When Hinata was in bed, her face become somber.
"I never imagined the beds would be so soft", she sighed, "Ino... tomorrow will you be able to help me?"
Ino supposed she should've been cautious but she wasn't. This gentle woman was her new friend so she agreed with curiosity. "Of course My Lady. With what though?"
"I'm sorry, I can't tell you yet but I will... tomorrow". Suddenly, her expression turned playful. "Also please just call me Hinata. It's feel weird for my friend to call me 'My Lady'" and Ino chuckled.
"Very well Hinata. But I can only do so in private, I hope you understand" Hinata pouted but relented and agreed. Ino bid her goodnight and left to report to Sasuke. Well, kind of. After all, she couldn't let down her new, strange, adorable friend.
