"You don't have to," Tony blurted just as they were crossing the threshold to Stephen's room. "I know you can't stay here but I have tons of places and I…"
"Tony." Stephen suddenly looked so sad again that it made Tony shut up. "I'm not going to vanish into thin air."
"You're not?" Tony hated how small and insecure he sounded but couldn't suppress it in time.
Now the sad look became a slightly less sad smile. "I've lost you so often, I don't intend to cut you out of my life when there's no need to."
I love you.
For unspoken words they echoed damn loud, Tony discovered. He tried to smile back but wasn't that successful, he feared.
"Okay," he said. "Good. I expect an invitation once you've settled in." Give me time, he begged silently.
