Summary
Mike Wheeler has a disguised diary that’s written in the POV of his Dungeons & Dragons character Mike the Brave, and after he gets flayed by Vecna and was outed for being in love with Will he uses it as a form of self-therapy and working through his own trauma and feelings. However, that’s not all, as he’s begun to add more direct poems, songs, and letters for Will as he regains more self-esteem too.
Will Byers, who was afraid of this exact thing happening to himself, had come out to everyone just prior to the final battle. And with Mike’s intense familial issues arising shortly after because of it all — he thought he spared Mike by not addressing the crush directly so soon after, and gave him the space to come to terms with things first.
However, now a semester into college, they still have yet to talk despite being roommates together at NYU because of just how messy recovery can be and how busy life gets. And one day Will finds Mike’s journal, thinking at first glance it was just a bunch of short stories. Surely Mike wouldn’t mind, right?
Well, he reads all of it, and realizes it’s everything Mike has ever wanted to and has struggled to say to him.

“What exactly does this pact entail, then?”
Mike leans forward very seriously, bringing his face close to Will’s.
“When they make it legal for you to get married, because they will.” He pauses, as if to make sure that Will is listening. Will laughs and nods for him to go on. “And if we’re both still alone and miserable—”
“Wow. Is that the awesome future you’re painting for us on our last night?”
“Shh.” Mike is doing a decent job at staying in character, but the crinkles around his eyes are giving him away. “If we’re both still alone by then… and at least partially miserable. That part’s important,” he continues dramatically, “I’ll marry the shit out of you, William Byers. Deal?”
Or, before heading off to college, Mike and Will make a pact. Fifteen years later, gay marriage is legalized in the state of Massachusetts. These two events are intrinsically linked to one another.
