    “We’ve – ” We’ve met, Wylan had been about to say. He cut himself off in time, his own father glaring at him. “Your Highness,” Wylan bowed low, bending at the waist. “It is – it is my honor.”

    He’d bent too, that night in the Barrel – did the Prince know? Or perhaps, worse-better-worse, had he been so unremarkable that the Prince had forgotten about him? Wylan swallowed, muscle memory forcing him to remember his lessons: he could rise only when the Prince allowed it.

    Or, an arranged marriage AU where Jesper is Novyi Zem’s wayward prince, Wylan sneaks out before his betrothal to enjoy the company of a Zemeni man, and Jesper adopts a goat – not necessarily in that order.

    Jesper shook his head, attempting to hand the paper back, “I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong man,” he said with a put upon smile, eyes darting for possible exit points, “I’m not a mercenary.”

    Jesper is running down on his luck when he's approached by a merchant with a dark job for him. He doesn't want to do it, but when his father is threatened Jesper is forced to take the hit.

    Sounds easy enough, until Jesper meets the boy he's supposed to kill, and everything starts to fall apart.

     

    Basically an AU where Jesper WAS actually sent to kill Wylan during the Book!Wesper first meet, only Jesper never actually goes through with the deed

He’d lied to Jesper about needing to pick up some of his supplies at his workshop, denying the offer to help. He’d said goodbye to Nina and Kaz, muttering something about needing to pick up chemistry supplies.

    Something grabs at the back of his coat and suddenly he’s flying, pulled up out of the water to land in a sodden heap in a small rowboat, the world’s most ungainly fish. He scrabbles away from his rescuer, expecting to feel pain again, his father’s men back to finish the job. Instead there’s a boy with light brown skin and grey eyes, the most handsome face he’s ever seen.

    As he casts around, confused, he finds himself looking into a pair of boundless dark eyes, a pale face cold as canal water. “Wylan Van Eck?” the man asks, his voice like rust, his tone as formal as if they’re being introduced at some banquet. Wylan is too startled to do anything but nod.

    Pekka Rollins and Jan Van Eck have made a deal. Kaz Brekker wants to sabotage it. What better way than to take Van Eck's son hostage on his way to music school?

    Meanwhile, Jesper wants the cute merchling they've kidnapped to smile at him, and Wylan just wants to survive the night.
