Medicine had changed so much in their very long lives - machines that could photograph the body with veins lit like highways at night, hearts and pancreas and kidneys grown in labs, therapies to ease pain and nightmares and allergies of all things. It seemed both unfair and fitting that in the end it was morphine that kept the pain at bay, and she'd cracked jokes about laudanum and the terrible suspenders Nicky had worn that time in China while Booker tied the tourniquet and prodded for a vein.

It begins to sprinkle outside, the start of one of many storms that come with the season. Damen snores peacefully next to Laurent, face pressed into the side of his chest as Laurent lays on his back, fighting the monster he was stuck with in his dreams.

Laurent pulled the covers closer to himself. “And you are here.”
“And I am here,” Nikandros repeated after Laurent, surprised that was something Laurent found comfort in. He took the broth bowl from the table. “Can you eat a little?”
“My hands are weak.” Laurent lifted them. “And shaking.”
“I can feed you,” Nikandros replied. He had done it with Damen too, after the fight with Kastor.
