Regardless of why, he's on his knees now, staring up at Matt, and this he does understand: Matt's got a finger beneath his chin, tipping his head up so he has no other choice but to meet his eyes. It's like looking at the sun: painful, but addictive. Jay is hit all at once with the understanding of why Matt blinded himself. Of course; it all makes sense now.
“Open up, Birdie,” he says, placing the rim of the bottle to his bottom lip, and Jay does, like he always does, inevitably bending to Matt’s will no matter how big a fuss he puts up. The wine is sweeter when it's Matt who pours it, he thinks, though that may be just an illusion from the swirling fog of his inebriation.(To his chagrin, Matt makes Jay wear a shitty dog costume for Halloween. Some wine might take the edge off.)

From what he remembers, it's that the kid from Peanuts, the piano player, for some reason he has a cat in the body of his piano. Why he has a cat in the piano no one can say. It's one of life’s great mysteries. But it may or may not be dead, is the point. As long as Schroeder plays, and never opens the piano, the cat stays alive. But it also stays dead. It's two things at once.
This is Matt. In the metaphor, if you haven’t caught on already. Or simile, he’s not sure. Always mixes the two up. But the cat is Matt. Just so you know. The cat in Jay’s piano.

Matt clapped his hands and rubbed them together, thrumming with excitement. “This is perfect. We go for a few days, rehearse like crazy, maybe even come up with a whole new act! Then we can show Marty and he’ll be like ‘oh my god you guys are just fantastic I’m going to call the Rivoli right now and DEMAND that they let you play!’ and we’ll book a show, and everything will be great!”
It was hard not to believe him, not to fall for his convictions and blinding optimism. Matt’s eyes were shining and bright and he was looking at Jay like he could offer him the whole world. And maybe he could.
