Summary
The miseducation of Narita Kyouji.
Kyouji was initiated in the spring, nearly a year later. You almost couldn't recognize him at the ceremony: carefully shaved, hair slicked back, luminous in a jet black kimono with the family crest. He had broad shoulders, a real batter's build, but the squinted eyes of an outfielder who could watch a ball fly into direct sunlight and still tell you exactly where it would land. He looked like the shinigami of rakugo stories coming to take his share of your life; he looked, disconcertingly, like the old photographs of your boss hanging on the office wall. For your own ceremony, your older brothers had instructed you to keep your eyes down, like a dog that knew its place was to submit. But you watched oyaji and him match gaze for gaze, staring at each other as they drank from their cups three times, and something churned in your stomach, looking fruitlessly for a way out.
