When his hands close around air instead, he lets his arm drop to the mattress and squeezes his eyes shut as the tinny voice from his headphones sinks into the silence of the dark room.

Gojo’s teasing comment seemed to die in his throat. He blinked, not sure if he heard her right. “What?”
Utahime twirled her spoon around in her cup. “I plan to settle down soon. I’ve been thinking a lot, and.... everyone’s nagging me to marry so…” she paused, looking up at Gojo carefully. I’ve just been... thinking,” she finished nervously.
His insides seemed to grow a degree colder with every word that trailed out of her lips. Dread infused him as he stood there stiffly, unsure what to do or say or think. The thought of Utahime getting married to another... panic seized at his throat.
She raised an eyebrow. “Well? nothing snarky to add, Gojo?”He opened and closed his mouth, seemingly unable to form words. Eventually, he swallowed and plastered a grin on his face. “Who’d wanna marry you, Utahime?”
‘I would,’ he thought.

Steve freezes.
“We’re not…uh…together,” he finally stammers.
“You’re not?” She sounds confused.
He shakes his head, trying to swallow the lump in his throat. “Why did you think…?”
(Am I staring too much? Am I flirting? Do I blush when he speaks?) Steve’s halfway through an anxiety attack when Tess shrugs and says, “Just something about the way he looks at you.”
