    Summary

Jason Todd grew up with a fundamental fear of being seen. Not in the sense of shyness, but in the sense of shame. He supposed, if he wished to contemplate the fear’s origins, he might start where most tragedies do:
The house he grew up in.
Where the act of wanting was as good as a death sentence to that desire.
He supposed he might even make an argument for the statement “people become what they are called”. He thinks that might have some merit, looking back.
What he fears most, (like most other people), is how obvious it is to others. The fear itself.
He wonders if they can see it.

Thanks to a rogue meta, the batfam gets to watch Jason's memories like a movie; and Jason just really wants a family again. But you cannot be loved if you aren't known, and well... if circumstances provide? might as well take the chance, right?

Simply a masterpiece of a story. I’ve genuinely cried while reading some chapters. The characterization is phenomenal and the exploration of Jason’s childhood is gut-wrenching in the best way possible. It also portrays the ruthless reality of poverty in such an accurate way, particularly great at demonstrating how it affects self-worth. All of the characters are wonderful here.

    Summary

The first thing that Willis Todd does out of prison is an experience far more humiliating than all the years he’s just spent in Blackgate.

A small mercy is, he supposes, that it is not Bruce Wayne who actually picks up the phone.

willis todd does not know how it felt to hold his son’s body as it got cold. bruce wayne did not ever hold jason as an infant, nor at five.

whatever they say about april and the worth of money.

    Summary

It’d been a long time since he realised he’d kill for Dick Grayson. It was only recently he realised that Dick would kill for him too. It was funny, how they always seemed to orbit one another but never came close enough to touch. The moon only lit from the reflection of the sun. He doesn’t produce his own light, he simply reflects the light the sun shares with him, the sun that’s sat next to him now.

Dick had always been the sun.

They’d always come so close but always seemed to miss.

    They'd had it almost

    Bookmarker's Notes

This fic is a goldmine! Incredible understanding of both Jason and Dick’s characters—the core of their characterization despite the rocky canon depictions in the comics (especially pertaining Jason). Amazing control over bittersweet, with the sweetness of “what could have been” being well explored and allowed to simmer. I especially love the attention to Jason’s communicative characteristic, he is often portrayed in other fics as out of touch with his emotions and incapable of honest conversations, but this fic encapsulates his earnest dialogue and introspection.
