Colt messed up.
After his accident, he was so frustrated and hated that other people saw him while he was weak, so he pushed them away.
Now it's been a year and a half, he reconciled with Jody after the events following Tom Ryder's disappearance, and he hasn't spoken to Ryland once.
It's up to his sneaky, spy/assassin older brother to make the two make up.
They can only wonder what Ryland's been up to in the meantime.

Every Saturday, Grace visits the local flower shop to buy two bouquets for the friends he lost.
Simon, the shop's sarcastic one-armed florist, doesn't know much about the awkward science teacher who keeps coming back, except that he likes chrysanthemums, Balloon flowers, and apparently has a habit of stabbing himself with cacti. Oh and that he makes Simon's heart race.
Maybe it's just another weekly customer.
Or maybe Simon is starting to look forward to Saturdays for an entirely different reason.

Ryland found the emptiest spot he could and dropped down onto a couch, pulling out his phone and opening the “Simon Support Group Chat.”
Ryland: He’s just gone back for surgery. They’re going to amputate his arm.
Typing out the words hurt like a knife to the heart. They had all known it was coming, but it hadn’t been reality yet. Now it was.

Reuniting in a hospital 5000 miles away from home was perhaps the greatest reliefs Ryland and Simon had ever felt. Following an accident that crushed his left arm while working as a saturation diver, Simon is taken to the hospital for treatment. Ryland is already there, having flown halfway across the world, to be with his partner and support him. However surgery is only the first step to Simon's eventual recovery.
