   • Original Characters
   • Earth Crew
   • Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
   • Trigger Warning: Cancer
   • Eva Stratt is maybe a bit OOC here
   • But this is already canon divergent and also extremely self-indulgent
   • Ryland Grace is a teacher
   • And that is almost as important to the crew as being a scientist
   • Teachers will save the world
   • Medical Inaccuracies
   • probably
   • attempt at linguistic accuracy when accounting for transfer errors from Russian
   • Major Character Death tag is canonical don't worry
   • Aromantic Asexual Ryland Grace
   • pre-launch
   • Trigger: Mentions of Cancer
   • I'm not sure where the idea of Lokken having a crush on Grace came from since it wasn't in the book as far as I could tell
   • I mean I read the book and didn't notice but that could be the autism or maybe I just missed something
   • POV Third Person Omniscient
   • And also third-person limited at times
   • shrugs
   • Unreliable Narrator
   • in that Ryland's opinions on religion/science relationship do not necessarily reflect my own
   • Stratt can show some emotion
   • as a treat
   • He is a GOOD teacher and he loves it and that is so important to me
   • As a teacher
   • also becoming a teacher because it's convenient at the time and staying a teacher because it turns out you love it and it's what you're made to do?
   • also me
   • As a nerd this book and movie means a lot to me
   • As a lover of human-made creations and not just letting cgi do everything this movie meant even more to me
   • As a lover of complex morally grey female characters this book and movie meant even even more to me
   • As a lver of the human capacity for love and friendship and goodness this book and movie meant even even even more to me
   • As a teacher this movie and book meant the most to me
   • Also tw child abuse
   • The book doesn’t really mention his childhood
   • so I am HC that it was bad for maximum angst potential
   • Hurt with a splash of comfort
   • is that a tag? It is now!
   • Also Ryland gives his crew cute nicknames. I don’t make the rules
   • Eva Stratt acts like a wet cat
   • She learned from Ryland!
   • Eva Stratt is not having a good time
   • Eva Stratt Needs a Hug
   • She does not get one
   • Eva Stratt curses A LOT
   • Hurt No Comfort
   • Angst
   • It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better
   • POV Eva Stratt
   • Also Dr. Lokken a little bit
   • I do not know her first name
   • sorry - Freeform
   • Was it in the book? Maybe
   • aroace ryland grace
   • Aromantic Asexual Eva Stratt
   • it’s not mentioned but it’s implied
   • Autistic Ryland Grace
   • Autistic Eva Stratt
   • Again not mentioned but it’s there and I want you to know
   • Also she may have killed a man but that’s neither here nor there
   • Also sorry Cacéres
   • you’re catching strays
   • it’s not your fault that Eva Stratt doesn’t like you I promise
   • Trigger warning: Medical stuff
   • Medical Innacuracies
   • Also musical innaccuracies
   • I tried to drop headcanon lore about Rocky's language
   • But I know very little about Music
   • Lots of Linguistics though!
   • Languages and Linguistics
   • I really need to research more about how transfer errors effect Russian ESOL speakers
   • because right now I'm probably making some mistakes with Olesya's English
   • I have a HC that her English is very utilitarian and she chooses not to faff about with the finer details
   • even though she could get it right if she could be bothered
   • she jsut has more important things on her mind
   • valid
   • But yeah anways point is that I've not had a ton of experience with Russian ESOL speakers
   • And I should do more research but golly I do lots of research already
   • so for now just deal with it I guess
   • Anyway Olesya my giiiiirrrl
   • Ryland Grace Is Not Graceful
   • Ryland Grace and Rocky are Platonic Soulmates
   • Rocky is like 'I have had this human for less than two weeks but if anything happened to him I would kill everyone in this tunnel and then myself'
   • Ryland is catching strays for his shitty compling skills
   • Mixing book canon and movie canon
   • and changing what parts about Ryland's life he remembers for comedic purposes
   • not super relevant but I want you to know
   • Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies
   • Medical Procedures
   • Medical Trauma
   • Rocky is very protective of Grace

   • A memoir by Olesya Ilyukhina and Yao Li-Jie
   • POV Third Person
   • POV Alternating
   • Ryland Grace & Rocky are Best Friends
   • POV Third Person Plural
   • Except she doesn't so much haunt the narrative as boss the narrative around from light years away
   • Olesya Ilyukhina likes dirty jokes and hates fishing
   • Yao Li-Jie is SUCH a dad
   • Ryland Grace Acts Like a Wet Cat
   • Trigger warnings for mild illusions to medical trauma
   • Biology Inaccuracies
   • All the innaccuracies basically
   • Definitely religious inaccuracies as well
   • Author is Jewish writing with catholic metaphors
   • Catholic Eva Stratt
   • Hail Mary Prayer
   • Brief references to childhood abuse
   • Ryland Grace Is Not Having a Good Time
   • Olesya Ilyukhina is not having a good time
   • Yao Li-Jie is not having a good time
   • Rocky is not having a good time either
   • basically nobody is having a good time
   • Hail Mary accent
   • also I’m taking some liberties even in my own field of science (linguistics) during this series so be warned
   • compling is not my specialty so especially the translator bits
   • those are designed more around fitting with the narrative than actually reflecting hypothetical programming abilities for alien language translators
   • Fluff
   • some plot mostly fluff
   • I've shenaned once and Now I will Shenanigan!!!
   • Russian-isms
   • Lesbian Olesya Ilyukhina
   • Ryland Grace's ridiculous alternate swears
   • Ryland Grace would like to stop catching strays for his terrible compling skills
   • Olesya Ilyukhina will not let that happen
   • adults acting like children
   • having a little fun while saving the world
   • Ryland Grace does not think his previous cardiac arrest is a big deal
   • his family/crew is happy to disabuse him of this notion
   • mentions of medical trauma
   • Self-Worth Issues
   • hand-wavy science
   • Scientific Inaccuracies
   • Suicidal thoughts ???
   • Not really sure if being willing to die counts but like
   • just in case
   • Ryland Grace is a Leaky Space Blob
   • Ryland Grace Needs a Hug
   • He gets many!
   • Rocky Loves Ryland Grace
   • this baby can fit so much fluff and angst and silliness in it
   • Fluff and Angst
   • Hurt/Comfort
   • It's who he is dammit!
   • Have I put some of my personal distaste towards some aspects of academia in this fic?
   • YES!
   • Have I put my own thoughts about how much we as primary education teachers are undervalued into Ryland Grace's mouth?
   • Also yes!!!
   • Listen K-12 teachers are JUST as important as college professors even though we're shit on near-constantly
   • metaphorically and also occasionally literally
   • Do you know how GOOD you have to be at teaching to explain things to kids in a way that they get?
   • Professors are important and have to be good at their jobs but it's not 'harder' than teaching kids
   • if anything it's a bit easier because you don't have to simplify the material to the same degree and for the most part everyone wants to be there
   • and you're not responsible for their emotional well-being and teaching them how to person as well as teaching them science and math and literature
   • so yeah teachers are like the most important people ever and our jobs are valuable and Ryland Grace loves being a MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER g-ddamit
   • thank you for attending my rant
   • HUMAN-MADE WORK
   • AI could never
   • I was using em dashes before AI was even a twinkle in some tech bros eye
   • AND I WILL CONTINUE TO USE THEM FUCK YOU VERY MUCH
   • Ryland Grace does not curse but I sure as hell do
   • Mix of book and movie canon
   • Ryland Grace Does Not Swear
   • Fluff and Humor
   • snapshots from an intergalactic roadtrip
   • this is very silly y'all
   • not quite crack but getting close
   • i mean probably
   • I don't know enough about medical accuracies so from that I'm assuming that there are inaccuracies
   • But Maybe I have been accidentally Competent
   • Name My OCs?
   • Not in this Fandom!
   • They might accidentally become important and thus get sent to space
   • It's really better for them if they're one-dimensional
   • and they don't have enough personality to care anyway
   • ISS | International Space Station
   • I cannot stress enough how a lot of these happenings are probably just as innaccurate as the court room scene in the book
   • but suspend your disbelief and enjoy the fic
   • I mean there's an alien and he's literally a Rock so who cares?
   • If the answer is 'you' then keep your mouth shut
   • because the rest of us want to be as delusional as Lokken's crush on Ryland Grace
   • No spoilers but she just might get one!
   • Olesya Ilyukhina has ADHD
   • she's an engineer this cannot POSSIBLY come as a surprise to you
   • on that note
   • Does Rocky have Eridian adhd question
   • probably statement
   • This is a little silly and very self-indulgent
   • very little plot only fluff
   • but I wrote An Angst earlier so I deserve it
   • Maybe this borders on crack but I like to think it's in character?
   • Zillow listings as a point of contention

   Summary

Derek Hutchins survived the impossible. Now he has to survive something harder: being taken care of.

Avery is very good at this. Derek is very bad at accepting it. They are both, slowly, figuring it out.

A collection of soft moments set after the end of everything, grocery runs and bad Skywars games and 2am conversations and learning, little by little, what it means to just exist without the weight of the universe pressing down.

Whatever you do at the crossroads, keep going forward.

They did. This is what comes next.
