Paxton gripped the Pokéball. It was strange, every time, to feel it so smooth in his hands. So new. He tossed it into the air, and a shower of sparks scattered into the morning air.
He smiled at his partner. The little Totodile was grinning wide, beaming with the childish excitement he would never quite grow out of. Paxton held his breath.
(It had happened every time—but every time, he wondered if the previous time had been the last. God, please, please—)
And then the little Pokémon went still. His eyes went far away. And when they cleared, they found Paxton’s, and there it was.
Recognition.
Dex—because it was Dex, now, not a Totodile he’d just met—gave the raspy, joyous babble that was his name for Paxton and launched himself into his Trainer’s arms. Paxton crouched halfway to catch him, then lifted him and cradled him close. He tried to hold back the tears for Taunie’s sake, but he couldn’t keep his laughter contained.
“Whaddya say, bud?” he whispered. “Think we can do another round?”
