But now he’s here. An hour and fourteen minutes away from defending his dissertation. An hour and fourteen minutes until the culmination of all the work he’s put in the last few years. An hour and fourteen minutes until it doesn’t matter what he’s done up to this point. The classes aced, the presentations given, the emails sent, the students mentored, the words written—none of it will matter anymore. All that will matter is this presentation and the decision that his committee makes today.
It all comes down to this. Somehow, today is the only day that counts.
“Ah, I thought I might find you here.”
Alex turns around, heart lurching into his throat as he faces Henry. His best friend. His biggest supporter.
And the only other thing that could make him feel like a livewire next to a puddle of water.

Alex is lost. The next logical step would be to try to track him down, like, in person. But he’s not going to do that. That’s insane behavior. Those are the actions of someone who doesn’t know how to take a hint, even though Alex can’t scrub the words you’re incredible from his mind. He’s folded and refolded the note a hundred times in an effort to forget.
James wouldn’t write that if he didn’t mean it. Right?
But Alex is not, he is not, going to prowl around the city with irrational optimism that James will also be out on the same street.
He's not that desperate.
