“What if I say I can pay you?” Greez says, even though there’s absolutely no way they’d get even close to covering it. But he still asks, “What if I said I could clear the books, would you let us go?” Sorc Tormo just throws back his head and laughs, practically cackling with how funny he found it. “Hey, come on, it’s possible. So: what would you say if I said I could pay it off?”
Sorc settles his hysterics, wiping a tear from his eye. “Not a chance, Greezy, there’s no way. But, I do have an offer for you.”
Greez narrows his eyes. “An offer?”
After months of halfhearted attempts, the Haxion Brood finally gets the jump on the Mantis crew. They drag their prisoners back to Sorc Tormo's new venture, a half-constructed station in a remote asteroid belt, where he has a proposition for them: Greez's debts, erased, as long as the crew helps him track down a troublesome old friend.
With hostages, visceral threats of violence, and a formerly-Imperial consultant pulling the strings, it seems Tormo has the upper hand. But there is one narrow way through: the crew just has to trust each other and hope that the Brood's bluff can be called.
