Karen spent long moments each day wondering about what could have been with Matt… if she'd been braver… more willing to risk it all.
The risks of being with Matt Murdock were high on their own, even without the added risks of loving Daredevil. Unfortunantly for Karen, there came a day when she realized that there was one risk that she couldn't bring herself to take - that was more than she was willing to gamble.
So she put distance between them.
She let herself be set up by friends. She let herself be picked up a few times at the bar and picked up a few guys in return, and one evening, at a friend's birthday party, she met Patrick. He was handsome, and nice… and there were sparks.
The day of Karen's wedding went as smoothly as ever a wedding day could go. Everyone showed up when and where they needed to. No one nursed a hangover from overindulging at the rehearsal dinner the night before. Karen woke from a night mercilessly free from nightmares… but she felt a shadow in her heart that couldn't be brought to light.

He thought things were going well. Sharing the same car, the light-hearted conversation, and the joke about her being a "freak in the sheets"... everything felt almost normal again. She leapt onto a moving pickup to stop him from getting stabbed in the face – what was that?
Then there was that conversation in the elevator. She insisted he didn't need to thank her, didn't need to explain. But he felt compelled to. He admitted he had messed up everything up but promised he would spend the rest of his life repaying her kindness in small doses she allowed. It seemed they had restarted something. Of course, he knew nothing would happen in the blink of an eye because he had royally fucked up everything. But what he didn't expect from her was complete indifference.
