for as long as bucky could remember, he’d wanted to be an architect. after 6 long (long) years and a masters degree to prove it, he’d gotten the dream job at a cushy firm that was paying him a lot of money to do the only thing he ever really loved.
then, his sisters sudden death found him no longer the fun uncle but the sole guardian to a 6 month old he had no idea how to take care of.
so, he quit his job and used a chunk of his savings to buy a garage shop with a little apartment over it in the middle of brooklyn and became every architects worst nightmare: a contractor. a for hire residential contractor.
a year later, captain america and all his quiet anger came stumbling through the door and without bucky realizing, everything changed.

Steve is tired. He didn't ask to be pulled out of the ice, he didn't ask to live in 2010s New York City, and he sure didn't ask to fight aliens that came out of a giant wormhole in the sky. So once the aliens are gone and it appears the world will keep spinning, he buys a ranch in the middle of nowhere Montana, and tells Nick Fury to only call if they come back.
Then HYDRA reappears (or has been there all along?) and his best friend who is also possibly maybe just a little bit the great love of his life who fell hundreds of feet out of a moving train to his death 70 years ago shows up, gun drawn, at his front door.
No rest for the wicked, I guess.

Sirius did not expect the stranger to be this strong (or maybe he should have, but didn’t have the time). They grabbed Sirius and changed their positions, so Sirius was pushed against a tree with enough force to knock some fruit down. The stranger pushed their forearm against his throat. Not enough pressure to suffocate him, but enough to keep him down and afraid. Sirius noticed that, even this close, he could not see the stranger’s face. He must be wearing a mask underneath that cloak. Or maybe it’s enchanted.
After the longest minute of Sirius’ life, the stranger eased the stress on his throat but did not let go. “What do you want?”
“You’re looking for something and I can help you,” Sirius rushed.
After the Great Wizarding War, the Black family escaped to a deserted island for twenty years. No one has ever left, until Sirius Black escapes with a stranger, a flying broomstick, and three pounds of aconite.
