Summary
Eva nods again, slowly. “Okay. So. What you’re saying is… your telepathic alien soulmate named Rocky has been helping you brainstorm solutions to the problems in the engineering department.”
As soon as the pictures came in from the Venus probe, Eva Stratt got to work. She spoke with every reputable xenobiologist she could find. Every one of them pointed to Dr Ryland Grace. All of them told her, in varying degrees of politeness, that he was a little… unhinged.

Summary
“So, I was thinking about why I’ve been throwing up. I think some of it is the actual, physical properties of the taumoeba, but I honestly think half the battle is the taste. See, humans use smell and taste to tell us if food is going to make us sick, like it’s moldy or smells weird, that sends a signal for disgust to our brains to stop us from eating it, and that triggers nausea.”
“I feel this way about all human food,” I say, and Grace rolls its eyes.
“Sure. But I think my brain is being overprotective about the taumoeba. It’s the same reason why human kids get picky or people throw up during pregnancy, even when the food they’re eating is perfectly edible. My brain is signalling to me that I shouldn’t want it in my body, mostly because -- well, I don’t. It smells like mildew and algae and has the texture of chia seed pudding that was forgotten at the back of a fridge. But that’s making me nauseous when I even think about putting it in my mouth, which makes me more likely to throw up.”
“But how would you eat without using your mouth?” I ask.
Grace grins at me. “That, my friend, is exactly the question I’ve been asking myself. And I think the answer might be something called a nasogastric tube."

Summary
“Careful, with that kind of language you’re gonna start a space war.”
“I am being kind.” Rocky deadpans, and now I’m really grinning. I’m sure it’s the most shit eating grin I’ve worn in the past few weeks, and my chest feels a little lighter.
“Pfff, you know humans would beat you in a space war anyway.”
“Yes. You would drown us.”
I can’t hold back the laughter that shakes my belly as Rocky sits there with his arms crossed—another habit he’s picked up from me—pretending not to be amused.
The laughter feels warm, it feels earned. Maybe everything will work out. Maybe it was just one bad dream. Maybe I’m not a coward. Maybe it will all be alright.Bang!
The laughter in my throat catches. The lights flicker. An alarm blares from the cockpit.
Ah. Jinxed it.
****
Grace never really had time to process a lot of the memories that returned in the midst of their world-saving mission. Now, with him and Rocky on the long haul back to Erid together, problems are making themselves known.
He's not a coward, and he'll do anything to prove it.

Bookmarker's Notes
Grace struggles to tell the truth about why he's on the Hail Mary; he's filled with dread when he knows Rocky would finally see his cowardice, and in disgust stop being his friend.
Being a coward in silence is so much easier than being alone again.

Summary
“What are you talking about?” Grace's fingers played quick chords as he spoke. He didn’t even look as he did it, but it did not make them any less purposeful.
“Discussing possible reasons why Tau Ceti is not infected while other stars are,” Eva replied deftly. “I would invite you to join, but we were just finishing—”
“Oh, that’s easy.” His hand twisted a knob, and the notes came out sharper. “It is infected—Petrova Line and everything.”
In Grace's opinion, dreaming about time traveling is no excuse for getting out of practice with his Eridian. To the rest of the Petrova Taskforce, it seems a bit odd that their resident Astrophage expert has suddenly taken to carrying a keyboard around and playing it whenever he speaks. Eva Stratt resolves to figure out what is going on.
