Buck hadn't intended to fall asleep.
To be fair, he'd just come off a forty-eight-hour shift, which was fine because that was the job and he'd been doing it for a ten years now. What he had not been doing for a decade though, was come off a forty-eight and drive across town to his sister's place to pick up his son, a four-years-old version of himself who had been saving up news for two days and needed to unload them immediately in the car on their way home, with no apparent order of events.

“Was that—” Eddie’s fingers twitch, gesturing vaguely to Buck’s side. “The hand thing. Was that weird?”
Yes. Extremely. So unbelievably weird. Buck wants him to do it for the rest of their lives. “No, it was fun, I just— um.”
Eddie’s head tilts — patient and listening.
“We slept together,” Buck admits, heat prickling at the tips of his ears. “When you were in Texas. And he kind of— he insinuated some… some stuff.”
Eddie goes very still. He’s quiet for a moment, thumbing at the warm pizza box in his hand. “Insinuated some stuff?”
“He was jealous,” says Buck, tentatively. “Of, you know— um. Us. I think he felt like he was always competing for my attention, or whatever.”
Eyes unfocused, Eddie nods slowly. “And I just groped your waist in front of him and his new boyfriend.”
Or: 5 times Eddie’s hands speak for him + 1 time Buck realises what he’s actually been saying all along.

“Really?” Maddie asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Alright. Let me put it in words you might understand.” She cleared her throat, and then, in what Buck assumed was supposed to be an impression of him– “You’re always talking or texting each other, you sing karaoke together, you do Buff-Fridays, you finish each other’s sentences–”
“Oh come on, that’s – that is so not the same thing,” Buck interrupted, rolling his eyes. It sounded weak, even to him, but he kept his jaw clenched so it wouldn’t show on his face.
“Why not?” Maddie laughed, like the answer was obvious. When he didn’t say anything, her gentle mockery slowly morphed into something genuine, her eyes softening with a cloying pity that made Buck’s skin itch. “Don’t you want it to be?”
or: Buck finally deals with his feelings, thanks to a meddling sister, a sippy cup, and a bedtime story.

“But he’s Buck,” Theo explains, pushing a small finger into Buck’s chest, as if to show Tommy exactly who Buck was. “Everyone calls him Buck.”
Tommy’s face relaxes slightly as he answers, “yes, that’s true, but—”
“Everyone!” Theo cuts Tommy off, holding up his hand as he begins to count on his fingers. “Me, Chris, Auntie Hen and Karen, Uncle Chimney, Ravi—”
Once he runs out of fingers on his one hand, he looks up at Buck, realization dawning on his face. “Aunt Maddie calls you Evan!” He exclaims, almost shouts in Buck’s face, eyes comically wide at this, apparently very important, piece of information.
Buck nods. “Yes, she does. Sometimes.”
“Aunt Maddie does, sometimes.” Theo reiterates to Tommy, his eyes narrowing as he cocks his head to the side, thinking. “Wait— Eddie does too! But only sometimes. Like less sometimes than Aunt Maddie. I think? But Eddie is Eddie, so it’s different.”
Tommy can’t help the snort he lets out, “you’re right about that, kid.”
Or, Buck runs into his ex at the grocery store, which forces Buck to confront feelings he's been ignoring for far too long.
