"Then," Nagi asks, sheepishly tracing circles into the sheets. "How does Reo feel about it?"
"About marriage?" Reo says, incredulous. He laughs, leaning back on his hands to better face Nagi. "Ugh, don't remind me, treasure. I mean— I guess it's bound to happen eventually, or whatever, but I can't stand it."
Nagi feels every cell in his body freeze up. "Eh," he says, too soft to even hear himself. "Is that so…?"
Reo scoffs, and his longer bang comes untucked, spilling out over his face. "Doesn't it sound awful? Being chained to one person like that, for forever? God, I don't think I could do it. I'd be bored to death."
Nagi doesn't say anything. He thinks he should say something. There are words somewhere in him—there must be, there are always words in people, that's what Reo's told him—but they've gone and lodged themselves somewhere behind his ribs, and he can't seem to dig them out. Everything hurts, all of a sudden. He thinks: Reo's words are the cruellest when he means nothing by it.
(or: at the end of another night together, nagi and reo talk about the future.)

"I stopped playing the past few days," Nagi tells him. He's lifted his gaze to the window now. It's beautiful outside, blue skies and thick white clouds, and Reo wishes he was out there with Nagi, having any conversation other than this one. "I've never felt so free."
"It's okay to take breaks," Reo mumbles. "It's natural."
At last, they make eye contact. Nagi looks so much calmer now, like he's finally escaped some great burden. Selfishly, Reo wishes that he'd look worse—that he'd be more upset over shattering Reo's life into little pieces as he says, "I'm not going to play football at all anymore. I'm quitting."
