    Summary

The next time Robby brings it up, they’re on the emergency room floor, shoulder to shoulder at the board in central. If Dennis were anyone else, he’d probably be getting lectured about cherry-picking cases, but instead he’s being grilled about building materials.

Robby’s in the market for a new place to live.

What Dennis can’t seem to figure out is why Robby keeps asking him so many questions about it.

“—and I know that there’s Becca and Tanner and Millie to consider, but I was wondering if you maybe wanted to move in? Together? With me?”

Mel blinks. He certainly doesn’t look like he’s having a stroke.

“Frank, why would we move in together?”

“I thought it might be nice,” he shrugs here, acting nonchalant even though Mel can see the tension in his jaw. “To take that next step in our relationship.”

“Frank, what are you talking about? We’re not in a relationship?”

At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”

    What.

Or, Frank thinks Mel doesn’t do physical touch.
Or, Mel doesn’t realize they’ve been dating for nine months.

    5+1 series.

Dennis Whitaker keeps getting into situations. At least he has people willing to drag him out. And hey, if he gets a boyfriend, friends, and a family from it, can it really be that bad?

“I don’t call you kid because I think you’re stupid. I don’t think you’re stupid. You’d know if I thought you were stupid, because I would tell you. ‘Kid’ is a…” He trails off, free hand tapping thoughtful rhythms on the steering wheel, “…Nickname. Term of endearment. Whatever you want to call it, but it’s not derogatory.”

Jack holds up a second finger.

“You have not been taking care of yourself. If you were, you wouldn’t have a low grade fever, and you would’ve called me as your boss or one of your friends to drive you instead of walking to work in the rain after your car died. You’ve been surviving. There’s a difference.”
