    Summary

Carol finds it in the third week of living alone with an unhived Zosia: a New York Times article, “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This.” An intimacy experiment involving thirty-six increasingly personal questions and, at the end of it, four uninterrupted minutes of eye contact, which sounds fake and humiliating and somehow still not bad enough to stop her.

    Carol, obviously, prints it out.

    Summary

"Carol knows in her heart that she shouldn’t pour herself another drink. The glass is sticky enough to remind her that she’s spilled the amber liquid over her own hands at least three times, and she’s licked them clean as if wasting a single drop of her favourite poison were a crime. If anyone could see her now, they would deem her pathetic, disgusting, hopeless. The fact that she can still feel the stinging shame of knowing that she’s exactly all those things makes her realize that she’s not drunk enough."

    “You’re Carol, right? I’m Zosia. I hear you’ve had quite a day.”
Carol scoffs, trying to conceal the cracks in her voice.
“And it’s not even noon yet.”

    Summary

    “We love you, Carol.”

She is sixteen and can’t meet her parents’ eyes as they try to say goodbye, her duffle bag at her feet and Camp Freedom Falls in front of her. She doesn’t want to be here. She doesn’t need to be here.

    Fuck this, and fuck them.
