he managed a crooked grin that felt half a second too late. “hey.”
his voice cracked—barely—but enough that beckendorf’s shoulders shook with a silent laugh beside him.
annabeth didn’t notice. she crouched to retie one of her sneakers, muttering something under her breath about clarisse being “all talk,” then straightened, tightening the strap of her chestplate. the sun hit her face at just the right angle, lighting up the bronze undertones of her skin, making the sweat on her temple catch like flecks of gold.
percy’s chest squeezed.
