    Summary

Penelope had been certain — certain! — that Colin would one day return her affections.

When his head is turned instead by her cousin Marina, Penelope must admit she was wrong.

After no small amount of crying, Penelope decides she will move on. That she will find a husband. That she will be kissed.

One question lingers in the back of her mind — why on earth does Colin look so stricken to find her doing just that?

    Summary

“Colin!” Penelope shouts, her face lighting up with a smile that had to be a million or two watts, rivaling the brightness of the sun.

“Pen,” he says, feeling some kind of weight drop from his shoulders, replaced by her when she jumps on him. Her arms wind around his neck and instinctively, he catches her, one hand on the back of her thigh and the other pressed against her lower back.

“Fuck, I missed you,” she breathes.

It’s exactly the homecoming he’d wished for. His heart takes off in his chest. She smells like vanilla and lavender, and her whole body is warm and wrapped around him, and he wonders if maybe they could stay like this for the rest of their lives, because God, he’s missed her, too.

With his face buried in her neck, Colin murmurs, “Yeah, me, too.” Neither of them really let go, and he doesn’t want to read into it that much because—he doesn’t even know. Because he’s scared, maybe. Probably. Because he doesn't understand it and doesn’t want to. Because for all his exploration of caves and canyons, he isn’t sure he’s ready for whatever he’d find the second he reads the text of their friendship and discovers something hidden between the lines.

    Summary

“I wouldn’t worry too much about these labels that humans give you,” said Lady Danbury as if she were reading Penelope's mind. “They’re based on human relationships. Life, love, everything is different for us than it is for them. Because we aren’t human, are we?”

“No, we’re not.” And thank goodness for that. Being a human seemed exhausting to Penelope.

“All three of those words mean exactly what you told me: love. Love is the most important thing we have. Love is one of the few things we stuffed animals can choose for ourselves. You should always hold onto love, Penelope. As tight as you can. Whatever form that love takes, and what you do with that love, is up to you.”

“Well, yes,” said Penelope, still a bit confused. Lady Danbury was smart, but she didn’t always make sense. Besides, they were getting off track from what she really wanted to know. “But is one of those words best? Best friends, maybe? None of the others have the word best in them, so I thought…”

    Summary

“In fact, are you sure you wish to be caught conversing with me, Mr Bridgerton?” she asks. There is a tease in her voice, her eyes darting over to where Henry Granville is now half-laughing, half-shouting at Lady Danbury. She kisses the silver cigarette holder and his eyes are drawn to her mouth once more. “This is not the sort of room Bridgerton boys should be caught frequenting. Agatha might tell your mother.”

He thinks it is a test.

    Well. He means to pass.

He tilts his chin, and drags his eyes up from her mouth. “I am exactly where I wish to be, Penelope,” he says decisively.

She smiles around the cigarette, smoke curling from the edges of her lips. He steps closer, and his heart is beating rather loudly.

“And what of you?” he counters, lifting an eyebrow and darting his gaze behind her, the flock of crows hovering and flapping. “I would not wish to keep you from your admirers.”

The blue starlight of her eyes meet his, direct and clear and bright. “I am exactly where I wish to be.”

    Summary

Penelope is, has always been, well…beautiful. Just…objectively and scientifically speaking. It’s obviously something Colin's had to ruthlessly compartmentalize as they’ve built such a deep friendship over the years, because those kinds of thoughts are a slippery slope and Pen is simply too important to him to ogle her like a horny buffoon, like some kind of disgusting man. But none of that changes the fact that she’s…well. Kind of perfect, really. Like, those…and her…whew. Just…her things. All the things.

    Objectively speaking, of course.

Or: The life and times of Colin Bridgerton—struggling travel writer, existential crisis-haver, nepo baby, and...Penelope's wingman? Oh boy.
