Summary
Leaving another gunfight and Dead or Alive posters behind in Norleans, Damen is on the run with some of his family’s wealth riding into the sparsely populated Great Plains toward the Rocky Mountains, pistols at his hips. With his family betrayed behind him, he expects never to return to The Ohios or the Texas Territories or Vèrginia, but with no specific goal in mind. Seeing a rough hand-carved sign with an arrow and the word “GOLDCUF” nailed to a log, he turns his horse and heads up into the mountains.
In a saloon, the painting behind the bar catches his eye. In the painting: a perfectly shaped lounging body, strong yet slender and lithe, in a deep blue corset, laced tightly through dozens of holes, top to bottom down the front, not quite exposing anything, yet giving the impression that any slight movement would reveal delights beyond belief. The top strings hung untied, begging to be slowly unstrung. Staring directly into the viewers’ eyes. Taking you straight on in challenge. Daring you to come closer and warning you to stay away. Bold and waiting to own you, not soft and yielding waiting to be possessed. No come-hither smile. Instead, the confident, chilly, in-control sapphire gaze of the town’s ice-cold bitch.

A creative alternate universe in which apparently misunderstandings abound but so do loyalties. Told from multiple points of view. The story itself isn’t concluded exactly, but the end notes (you might have to use Google translate or some such to be able to read them) do give a bit of much desired clarity. An interesting, chaotic story, in which we get to see both Damen and Laurent from other people’s points of view

an intriguing alternate history; the timeline is just a bit off from the original novels but it changes SOOOO much. In this story, a lot happens in a short time. i'm inclined to describe it as entertaining, but there is danger and anger here, sooooo... it’s marginally crack, marginally serious alternate history. Worth a look!

Most of the men being drunk and making bad decisions. Probably only Damen doesn’t fall into that category. Because he didn’t get drunk and he wasn’t there at the beginning. Things mostly seem to work out pretty good, mostly thanks to Damen, but someone owes someone else a truckload of money!
