(Humanized AU)
"Who's calling?" Doc asked, pinching the bridge of his nose in hope he would wake up soon, and it would have been morning, anything else just a bad dream. But this was too real to be a dream. He could feel his heart pounding hard against his chest.
"I need your help." The boy sounded a little desperate but didn’t tell who he was. His voice felt like it was haunting Doc, biting somewhere in the back of his mind, but he couldn't completely grasp why it felt so familiar.
He had been an expert at drowning memories, suppressing those things he’d once called joyous moments.
When someone familiar calls in the middle of the night, Doc's life is turned upside down. The kid needs help to get bailed out of jail, and Doc has no choice but to dig up memories he had buried deep long ago.
Or: The AU where Smokey was Lightning’s dad, Kiddo tries to find himself after Doc takes him in, Doc tries to forgive himself for things he’d done and not done, and Cups are not empty.

Summary
When Husk died twenty-three years ago as a pre-teen, he assumed he was in for an eternity of being alone. But then he met Angel, and started thinking Hell might not be so bad after all.
Angel had never let anyone see his true self until Husk came into his afterlife. But Angel was damaged, and not even Husk could chase away the shadows.
After a decade of joy laced with pain, Angel chose to disappear, leaving Husk broken.
Over the last thirteen years, Husk rose through the ranks of Hell to become an overlord, trying to change who he's always been. Angel let the pen fall from his fingers in boredom, his chin resting in the palm of his hand as his eyes flicked up to the analog clock on the wall. 9:45 PM.
