Summary
In modern Western tonal music theory, a diminished second is the interval produced by narrowing a minor second by one chromatic semitone. It is enharmonically equivalent to a perfect unison; therefore, it is the interval between notes on two adjacent staff positions, altered in such a way that they have no pitch difference in twelve-tone equal temperament.
The ache I feel for Adrian has been a part of me for so many years that it is a familiar dragging weight, like a mangled sixth limb. The ache for Grace is stranger, worse. Not because he is an alien, but the opposite; he is so much of myself that I have entirely lost the sound of where he begins and I end, and somehow I still want him closer, closer, closer.

Grace has a problem. He's not sure if it's something he wants to fix.
Turns out, he’s still addicted. But this time, there are no substances involved. He’s doing this on his own, out of sheer will, rooted off his self-hatred. He’s addicted to something else: letting himself deteriorate. Letting himself lay awake late at night in discomfort. Letting himself cry because this is the only thing that gives him a sliver of control. Taking his new chance for granted because self-sabotage has always won over everything else.
