Summary
What everyone knows but no one acknowledges about Gusu Lan’s famed intersect cultivation lectures is that its true purpose is to allow the next generation of cultivators to make advantageous matches.
What Lan Wangji knows that he is expected to find and marry someone his sect will approve of before classes end - a partner whose animal instinct will align with the Lan dragons' notoriously monogamous traditions and who will provide the Lans with a politically useful alliance.
What he cannot acknowledge is the truth - that foxes are known to be seasonal monogamists who take each mate for a single season only; that he has fallen in love with Wei Wuxian, against what should be possible given their incompatible natures; that Wei Wuxian might be courting him too, despite the odds; and that if he bows to their mutual attraction, marrying him can only lead them both to misery. -

“So,” Wen Qing mutters under her breath, fingers curling aggressively over the steering wheel as Jiang Cheng swings himself into the passenger’s seat. “They’re going to be insufferable.”
Jiang Cheng does not put his head down on the dashboard. He does not do that because he is actively and purposely not letting Wei Wuxian get to him, but it’s a close thing.

Summary
As Lan Wangji walks away from the Yunmeng Jiang delegates and the muffled wailing of their senior disciple, some mindless impulse makes him pause at the top of the staircase. ‘Wei Ying, Wei Wuxian’ lets out a frustrated scream, shattering the silence of the Cloud Recesses even from the foot of the mountain, and the lump of distaste burning at the base of Lan Wangji’s throat abruptly gains physical weight as the pressure of it strains against his rib cage. On instinct, he stretches out his hand; there’s a sudden burst of relief, as if his head is surfacing from water, and he watches as a formless pulse of light radiates out his chest and solidifies before dropping heavily into his waiting grip.
A blue heart throbs gently in his palms. Lan Wangji is struck by the vague and terrifying impression that this will cause problems for him in the very immediate future.

“A-Jie,” Jiang Cheng says, watching from the far dock as Wei Wuxian practically springs out of his clothing before flinging himself bodily into the lake. Lan Wangji barely has a chance to turn his head away from the resulting splash and look back in alarm at the point of entry before he’s suddenly yanked underwater by the ankle. “I think Wei Wuxian might be gay.”
“Hm.” Yanli merely smiles, skimming her toes over the surface of the lake as the two emerge with a gasp. Wei Wuxian treads water in the opposite direction, yelping with breathless laughter; Lan Wangji screams his name at a volume and level of exasperation that is definitely forbidden in Cloud Recesses. For a lifeguard-on-duty, Jiang Cheng’s sister looks distinctly unperturbed at the possibility that two high-ranking clan members are about to drown each other in the backwoods. “Well. I would hope so.”In which Jiang Cheng comes to the slow-moving realization that he is, in fact, the resident straight among his entire group of friends.
