For a moment, it seems so bizarre as to be impossible. He's hallucinating. He's still dreaming. There's no way Peter is here, because they haven't seen each other in years, and their reunion would surely be planned, a far more momentous occasion than this.
But then, of course, there was never any fanfare when they first crossed paths either. Only the ill-timed tinkling of a bell.

Summary
“Dr Carter's… Dr Carter's been shot.”
Those are the words that crackle through County General's radio, but nobody truly believes them until the ambulance screeches to a halt outside the entrance, and Mark tugs open the passenger side door- only for Carter's unconscious body to list out, covered in blood from the neck down. Somebody sobs.
“I drove as fast as I could.” Zadro explains, stumbling over his words as the assembled team (Mark, Carol, Lydia, Malik) struggles to pull Carter onto a backboard. “Tried to put pressure on his neck but the blood just kept coming.”
OR
Carter is shot in S5 E17 instead of the other paramedic.

"What's wrong, Peter?" Something in Peter’s reply must betray him, because Carter's tone is suddenly sharp with concern.
"I…I don't know." Peter’s answer comes out weak and shallow.
"Are you hurt? Peter, where are you?"
Peter can almost reach out and touch the fear that's coming through the speaker. He wants to reassure Carter, tell him that he's fine, and to go about his day. But he can't summon the energy to lie right now.

Five times Peter Benton called John Carter, and one time John called Peter.
When Benton left County General, Carter told him "Call, and I'll come pick you up." What if Benton did call?
