Summary
Edwin pushed himself to sit up, shifting his torso to take in Charles’ appearance in the moonlight that illuminated the room through the mostly closed curtains. “You know, you are a miserable liar Charles.” Edwin spoke in a knowing, dry tone, almost sounding parental. They had known each other for far too long to be able to lie behind false smiles or words. The statement, while sounding cutting, came from a place of abject love and care. It had been them against Hell for as long as either of them could remember. Side by side in cages, talking in the times they were left alone about anything and everything that came to mind. Charles knew Edwin was so bright, it came as a part of his ability, but the curly haired boy was almost sure he would have been brilliant without it given how tenacious he is. A long winded sigh escaped Charles, looking like a slowly deflating balloon as he did so. Without another word he leaned against Edwin’s side, resting his head on the brunet’s shoulder.
”Didn’t want to remind you of it, Eds…” He mumbled, the two had been speaking in hushed tones to keep from waking Monty who slept on the other side of the room.

Summary
They kept at it patiently, taking turns feeding Arthur bits of salmon. He didn't want to leave the safety of Edwin's lap again, but was open enough to the girls giving him his food where he was. He huffed out hot breath over Crystal's fingers as he smelled her, lightly bumping her hand with his snout. When she took that as her cue to pet him, running her fingers over the smooth scales on the top of his head, he let out a faint trilling sound.
"He likes you," Charles remarked, grinning.
"He's so adorable," Niko said. "Do you think he'll let me pet him, too?"
As it turned out, Arthur loved pets from Niko, to nobody's surprise. She beamed happily when the dragon leaned into her touch, and barely held in a squeal when he rested his chin in her open palm.

Summary
Charles and Edwin are looking forward to a break over Christmas, but when a ghost who was drowned in suspicious circumstances comes to them for help, they agree to take his case.
Their investigation takes them to Manchester’s Gay Village and the waterways that run through and under it.
”Why do your plans always dissolve into being chased?” Edwin huffs as they come to a stop.
Charles moves in front of Edwin, rolls his shoulders and raises his bat again. He mutters, “Why is it they’re my plans when they go wrong, and our plans when they go well?”
“Shush, I must concentrate.”
