Max’s mind roared, and the thought was so loud and intrusive that George physically stiffened.
It’s freezing out here. Everyone looks like a corpse. Lando looks grey, I feel blue, but his lips are bright fucking red. They look so soft. Look at how they move when he talks. Why am I looking at his mouth? Fuck, I want to take my thumb and press it right against his bottom lip just to see if the colour changes. I want to bite it. Why do I want to bite him? What is wrong with me?
Or, a mind-reading fic set in the canon universe. George inherited his mother's quirk of mind-reading, and it was not helping that the only thought he could not block was Max's.

George lets out a breathless laugh; a brittle sound that cracks in his throat. "Locked? Oh, no, no. I-It sticks, you see. The wood, in the damp weather. It swells up. Toto... Toto told me to stay in bed and rest properly today. I... I must have just gotten confused. Thought it was stuck."

Summary
Max goes to the nest and stands at the edge. George feels small and stupid, one of Max’s cloaks working in his hands as he kneads the fabric. Max leans over and picks up a scrab from the nest, a small blanket, and presses it to his face briefly.
Then— pulls away. Grimaces at the smell. He drops the blanket, disgusted at George’s scent.
"God, George," Max mutters, his voice muffled behind his hand, gravelly and choked. He won't look directly at him. "What is that?"
