This is a stupid idea, and she knows it. Showing up unannounced at the Sharps’ door is catastrophically dumb, and will most likely result in her being blacklisted from any and all places, parties, and functions in high society for being a “predatory whore unabashedly determined to corrupt Roger and Virginia Sharp’s daughter.” Helen had told her in those exact words what people would say if she ever came to her house with the sole intention of seeing her outside of the designated hours.
It’s unfortunate, then, that she is currently perched beside the perfectly manicured garden outside the Sharps’ manor, leaning against the hood of her crumbling Honda, waiting for Helen to catch a glimpse of Madeline through the window.

It had all happened so fast. She had been so, so incredibly drunk. Well, drunk and hopped up on copious amounts of Molly. And cocaine. And probably the high she had gotten from yet another show opened and sold-out for the foreseeable future. And from finding out her mother finally tripped and broke her entire leg in the process (“penance,” Madeline called it).
Regardless of the circumstances, the main point is this: at some point, Madeline Ashton had snuck off to a corner of her yard and stripped. This, in and of itself, is not an issue; she has many nude photos of herself floating around, saved to Pinterest boards and regular corkboards by some creep in the woods of Missouri. The problem lies in who was with her.

Here, Madeline continues to learn with every man she whisks away from Helen—her name, something that burns the flesh behind her teeth when she says it—is a very unexciting place to be. Overrated, even. He is not soft, or passionate, or even pacing himself; his hands move as though he is trying to build a skyscraper before sunrise—though he is more accurately constructing the Tower of Babel—not like he is “making love,” or like he is invested in anything other than making himself come and maybe her, too, if he remembers how.
It must be worth it, she tells herself, to sleep with these men. Though they are selfish, she is, too, and this is something she must have if it means Helen can’t—or will, all the while knowing where her boyfriend was the night prior—even if it is horrendously nondescript.

The void was hard to describe. The heat of burning up with the planet had seemed unbearable at the time, but it had been a feeling. Fire could emit light, at the very least. And she had burned bright in Madeline's arms, engulfed in solar flames and screams of terror and anguish. Her wife had held her tight with all the force she could muster, trying her hardest to make sure they'd be together. Helen had used every ounce of energy left in her immortal corpse to stick to Madeline, too. But, although their shared love for each other had felt larger than the Sun itself, the collapse of their home, their street, their city, their world had ripped them apart. And, now, Helen's ashes could only float away, unable to cry, unable to scream, unable to die.
Or: what happens when the Sun finally devours the planet, as Helen says.

Summary
Even though Madeline had been doing her own makeup for theater productions and movie premieres her entire career, having become a walking cadaver forced her to relearn the basics. Helen was never one for makeup until she took Viola's potion and transformed into a breathtaking figure. Although she took the swill long before Mad did, following the everchanging makeup trends of each year grew tiresome. Being ever-living had its advantages, but the walking dead part of it all remained difficult, especially without Ernest's artistic talents. Normal makeup products weren't cutting it anymore, especially not for the wear and tear they put their bodies through. It was true that nothing could kill them anymore, but that didn't mean all the bruises, scrapes and love marks would fade away.
