Summary
Right at his breaking point, right as Simon attempts to pray to that "eye god" he saw in the sky, he gets brought to the Project Hail Mary universe a few years into Grace and Rocky's journey to Erid. Grace and Rocky now have to care for this distrustful, volatile, and bloody (and "scientifically fascinating" according to Grace: the absolute nerd whom I love) mess of a man. aaaaaand lovely and painful things ensue as two humans now trapped in each other's company try to relate.
I just really wanted to give Simon the happy ending that he deserves after the absolute nightmare fuel he went though in the SM-13. Grace gets Rocky and a happy life on Erid, and I neeeeed Simon to have at least one thing go right in his life. Simon needs someone as kind as Grace in his life, and Grace needs another human to keep him sane. It's perfect! It will all work out and everyone will be happy! Right...? -

And there, floating in the vast expanse of space, is a tree.
“What the actual—?” I mumble.
“What Grace see?” Rocky asks eagerly.
“It’s a, um…” I zoom in on it, making sure it’s really what I’m seeing. It’s seriously a tree, a large maple tree. Without any soil, the roots drift as if tendrils underwater in the zero G. Just above the roots, the trunk is skewed, like it’s growing around something. The bark is red, the leaves dead, most branches bare.
“It’s a tree,” I say. “Like, from Earth, kind of tree.”
“Grace lying,” Rocky claims, skittering over to see for himself. Then, “Grace… not lying.”

Well. That settled it. This man was either fucking stupid, or he was the most kind hearted person that Simon had ever met. Deep down, he had a feeling he already knew which one.
He looked up at Ryland with heavy, drooping eyelids to see hair sticking out in every direction, glasses askew, and a big cozy sweater swallowing his frame. Cute.
If Simon didn’t watch himself, he was going to be in big fucking trouble. As his eyes fluttered closed, he also got the sense that it was already too late.
Or: Two very clueless men cry and hug each other. They fall in love in the process. Then maybe they kiss and stuff too.
