To say that he had noticed Liebgott would be a statement, and it would be true, but it also would not fully capture the situation.

Summary
“It’ll be fun,” Marge says to him over the phone as he’s unpacking another box in his tiny, studio apartment. “I’ve been to a few other classes, it’s a good environment.”
“It doesn’t sound like my sort of environment, Marge,” Gale says, picking up an astrophysics textbook that pushes the bounds of what a single-handed grip is capable of. It strains the tendons in his wrist as he tries not to drop it on the way to its new home in the built-in bookshelf. The edges of it are bloated, almost rubbery with how many times it’s been painted over in the same shade of white, a few spots chipped away to show rich brown wood underneath.
“Your sort of environment is on a hill with a telescope, with nobody around.”

"You got a name?" the man asks. They're almost of height. He's got cedar brown hair and is slimmer than Gale, but in a way that speaks of nature and genes instead of deliberate starvation.
Gale says, "Buck."
"I'm Paul. That your real name, Buck?"
"No," Gale says, and feels like he's lying.

Summary
What is Leckie doing? Doesn’t he care if people see, what they’ll think? He’s a braver man than I am, Sidney thinks. But as much as it alarms him, it’s an irresistible feeling to have been chosen by Leckie, to have his head resting so pleasantly heavy and warm against his knee, making him feel that he really belongs here, that he’s part of their group now. Sid feels a gratitude that he’s not sure how to express.
The first night on Guadalcanal, Sidney has a little too much rice wine.
